All voting machines across the country should be tested and calibrated prior to putting them in the field before Election Day, this could very well be the Republicans ace in the whole, by stealing votes through electronic countermeasures. And highly populated black areas and Hispanic areas that machines really need to be calibrated, Southern states most definitely.

This is interesting since in the Philippines, vote rigging is considered the norm. As we say it there, "there are no winners, just the cheaters and the cheated."
Anyway, there's been a lot of noise in the Philippines too that we ought to adopt an electronic voting machine but this video clearly shows that its still not perfect.
Maybe another system should be built from the ground up again, and this time open to scrutiny and suggestions from the voters themselves. An Open Source solution perhaps?

All I can think about are those people who do not have the time to become aware of this..those who have 2 or 3 jobs and are trying to raise a family.
I agree with much of what you, JanforGore said however I just would like to say how sad it is that it has come to this. One of our rights has become so tainted we do not trust it at all. - 3 years ago

Has anyone see this vote flipping flip to Obama or Nader or Micky Mouse? If not, that would kinda point the finger at who is fuckn with the machines. Pretty straight forward.

So if McCain "wins" it is automatically vote fraud? If so, then what? Doing nothing as it has been for the last eight years? There was supposedly proof of a 2004 theft in Ohio... what has that led to? And people just let Bush take 2000 with nary a whimper which actually started it all. So how much of this is OUR fault? And what if Obama "wins" based on this information? Then the machines are ok?
I won't trust the outcome of this election regardless of who "wins." As long as these machines are in voting booths in presidential elections, to me no "president" is legitimate regardless of who it is. And why then aren't supporters of these candidates questioning why these candidates aren't saying anything about it?
I will ask for a paper ballot when I go vote for Ralph Nader on Nov. 4th and make it known that I protest the machine I am voting on and will follow up on it if I am forced to vote on it with my Secretary of State as I have many times already to no avail because millions of others didn't do that. People have to care more about Democracy after they leave the booth.

Nothing new, and nothing coincidental. The link below has made the rounds, but if you'd like further reading, please look at Mark Crispin Miller's book with substantial citations throughout "Loser Take All" (EAN 9780978843144)
You will find the election and weeks prior are nothing compared with the political maneuvering going on while our attention is elsewhere.
I've been encouraging people to video the booth regardless, but I'll be checking out videothevote.
thanks and good luck

That is horrible. People do not have time to wait for machines to get recalibrated. They will need to go to work and since the legal allocated time for voting in most states is 2 hours, they will probably just leave and either not vote or leave the vote the way it is. We need to fix this problem now and not wait until later.
This is a anti-democracy move by a "so-called presidential candidate". McCain to be you are no longer an American Hero. - 3 years ago

I just went to poll worker training in a WV county yesterday and asked about the picture/video taping of the vote. I was told by the county election official that it was absolutely against the law to bring any recording device into a polling place. If I were to find someone attempting to do such, I should advise them that they are in violation of the law and get them to stop. She didn't specify if this is federal law or WV state law, and like a dumbass I neglected to ask. But it seems, on the surface anyway, that the recording of your personal vote will not be permitted.

rainbowryan420:
It is illegal -- for obvious reasons -- to record someone else's vote. Despite what isnamthere was told, though, it is NOT illegal to record your own vote! Polling places are required by law to provide privacy in the voting "booth" so that no one can see who you are voting for when you vote; you can use that privacy to record your voting experience, and no one would be able to tell without illegally violating your privacy.
I don't recommend confronting poll workers on this issue. They work hard and if they're sometimes misinformed that's usually not their fault. If you do run into someone trying to stop you from recording your own vote, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE or 1-866-MY-VOTE-1. Making your own record of how you voted is important not only to catch "technical glitches" but also to document your vote in states where there is no paper trail, only a touch-screen.
Also, I have seen news media footage filmed inside polling locations while people were voting, though of course they were careful not to show the details of who anyone was voting for. So in certain circumstances you might be able to have your cameraphone or camcorder out before (or after) you go into the voting booth -- though you probably shouldn't try unless you have press credentials.

Well in WV there is no real privacy. They have the electronic machines set up away from each other so that the voters cannot see each other's screens. But you're not in a booth. So if one whips out there camera phone, they will be seen by poll workers doing it. The county official from the voting office explicitly told me that it was against the law and that she would threaten people with the law if she found that happening. I'm not sure what calling the number after the fact will accomplish. But hey, give it a try.

Plus, I'm a little confused. If it is legal to record your own vote, then why does your strategy entail hiding from the sight of poll workers in an enclosed booth? If it's legal, you should be able to do it whether others can see you or not.

The machines are crap, but I think it is great that we see a Republican arguing for acurate voting. When Reagan wonI just bit my tongue because it was the system and it seemed fair at the time.

We know this occurs and yet we still use these machines to help decide who will be the next President?! A minor tech glitch is ordering chicken nuggets and receiving a hamburger instead, this is not a fast food order! Wait... maybe the machines are taking over- is McCain needed for Judgement Day to take place... i'll be back

What a joke.
Let's just recalibrate this dang thang one more time.
Why don't they just attach a mouse to these things and you can click the box of the candidate you want to vote for? Seems to work for my spanish homework. Better yet, let's get out some crayons and paper and draw a picture of our candidate, hang the thing on our fridge when we're done. It'd do just about as much good as electronic voting.

I'm sorry to correct you, but Bush didn't even win the 2000 election legitimately because Katherine Harris was his campaign manager in Florida and at the same time active in purging 1,000's of voters from the voter rolls.
The McCain accusation of "destroying the fabric of democracy" has to be levied against his campaign because they have been trying to purge voter rolls in Ohio and other states and will try to challenge as many voter registrations as possible come election day in order to increase the lines at the polling stations. Hey!...
Bush won the 2000 election fair and square, 5 votes to 4!
Isn't it comforting to know Stalin's approach to voters' rights is alive and well with America's Republican party? It's not the people who vote that count. It's the people who count the votes.
