Prop. 8 to ban same sex marriage leading so far

Image

"After a heated, divisive campaign, fueled by a record $73 million of spending, California voters Tuesday were backing Prop. 8, which would change the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

Six months after the California Supreme Court cleared the way for gay and lesbian couples to wed legally, the estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who took advantage of the landmark decision now are wondering if they will be the last.

The campaign pitted those who argued that a same-sex marriage ban was nothing more than outdated discrimination against gays and lesbians, and conservatives and Christian groups who countered that the state and the courts have no right to change unilaterally a definition of marriage that has existed for centuries.

The flood of dollars that poured into California from every part of the country made Prop. 8 the most expensive social issue race the nation has ever seen. And behind every one of those checks was someone desperately worried about what the result of the election could mean to them and their state.

The Prop. 8 campaign set a record as the most expensive social issue election in the nation's history, with more than 140,000 donors giving a combined $73 million to the two sides. Across the state, thousands of volunteers worked phone banks and knocked on doors in an effort to drum up support."

[Editor's update @ 0340 PST: Early returns are showing voters favored Prop 8, but " about one in six votes counted, the preponderance of them by-mail voters who — polls say — tend to be more conservative, the outcome was anything but clear as both campaigns waited for returns for the Bay Area to come in."

What is really sad is that same sex couples really believe it's possible for them to marry. That they think that, in trying to marry, they can make their unions right in the eyes of God is absolutely ludicrous!! God is not going to go against His own biblical instructions to satisfy what mankind wants to approve in the name of human progression. When we see two same sex people kissing on tv, they are always extremely attractive because they want us to not focus on the ugliness of it all by having those who are appealing to the eye depict the behavior. We rarely see regular gays and lesbians portraying the lifestyle on tv shows. We only see the ridiculousness of it all when we witness gay pride rallies; the bearded men kissing other men and the dykes with short hair and wallets in their back pockets. We don't see lesbians purchasing makeshift penises in novelty shops and gay men wearing bras stuffed with tissue. We don't see the psychological aspects of homosexuality because, like a devil in a blue dress, that's where the ugliness lies. I'm an ex-lesbian who supports Prop. 8.

      His own biblical instructions?

What the fuck are you talking about?

God didn't write the bible, MAN DID.

By the way, you better stone disobedient children and shun your wife on her period. God "commands" that too.

    • I guess having religious beliefs and believing that the country was built on those beliefs makes me a horrible person. Ah well. I'll learn to live with myself one day.

The founding Fathers choose very carefully when making documents

Note they debated using "God" but chose instead "their creator" in the declaration of independance owing to the fact they wanted to be inclusive and generic

Uhhhh please look up the Treaty of Tripoli.

"As the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen [Muslims] ... it is declared ... that no pretext arising from religious opinion shall ever product an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries....
"The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan nation."
~ Treaty of Tripoli (1797), carried unanimously by the Senate and signed into law by John Adams.

      And then there's this...

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
~First Amendment of the US Constitution

Also, about a million more quotes made by the founding fathers in regards to religion and government.
We are not a "Christian nation" - it's just the religion of the [often arrogant] majority.
      Try again.

If you're trying to marry your own gender, that's scripturally impossible. So, unless your parents are of the same gender, you can never have a valid marriage no matter what happens. Marriage is appointed by God himself to be one man and one woman; anything else is just fantasy.

      Actually, your god is fantasy.

      The STATE is real.

Funny that the divorce rate is so high amongst Christians right? I thought that he has supposedly sanctioned all those marriages?

And I guess we're all going to hell! Because nowadays women aren't considered property anymore! No, people don't marry to carry on their property lineages anymore, and the lord is displeased by that.

People like you make me want to tear my hair out.

If I met you in the street, I'd hand you your fucking teeth.

Bwire, Liberal_extinction...God isn't real, gay people are in love and wish to form a union. I know most straight people who don;t marry for love, It's for the taxes, the church approval, parents wishes. So keep your fears and hatred to your self! A barrier was broken last night that is going to bring a change to this country. We as a nation are awake and embracing change, go crawl under your rock and fear god. I'll stand in the storm and embrace the true power of freedom...

Wow, I'd give anything for some douchebag pissant liberal like saladin to walk up to me on the street and attempt to hand me my teeth. It's hilarious to watch liberals on the internet portray themselves to be some kind of tough guy, the reality is that he would probably swing his purse at you and then run in the other direction screaming "rape" or "fire" at the top of his lungs hoping to be saved by some good samaritan.

And most conservatives are fat chickenhawk cowards who think they have a big dick because they beat their wife and have twelve shotguns at home. In real life, they have NO conviction. Whenever people call them out on their bullshit, they shut the fuck up and walk away. They hide their bigotry behind anonymity.

I'd stomp your face in you stupid fuck.

Nice to see all the passive liberal love and kindness in this thread. Never ceases to amaze me how deep hypocrisy runs in the left wing. One day Saladin, you'll run your mouth to the wrong person during some emo outburst of liberal rage and you'll get yours.

Someone told me that most of NoCal hadn't been counted yet, including SF and Santa Cruz.

It might still get shot down.

      I hope so.

Otherwise, man, what a bittersweet victory.

Actually .... The original framers didn't think we would need to amend the constitution to give rights but to take them away.

Any rights not taken away by the constitution of the United States or of a State are reserved to the PEOPLE.

We the People (the ones that have rights) choose to give up certian rights to recieve the benefits of having a government - those right given up being enumerated.

Though after some concideration several amendments now called the "Bill of rights" were offered because it was feared that some how government would run amock and find a way to userp rights that were never given to it.

the 1st and 2nd being nearly most important...
The right to arms of the people was very much indended to prevent the government from attacking the people.

      Though Jefferson was correct:

Same sex marriage is not a civil rights issue. It is a moral issue and an absolute gay rights agenda to redefine marriage as being not just between one man and one woman. Should prop. 8 pass, it would mean there's still hope for America as far as biblical christian ethics are concerned. I am an ex-lesbian who is totally for the passing of prop. 8.

    • CNN is reporting that it can still be defeated. Remember this is just 14% of the precints reporting. Obama was down double digits in Virginia early on only to narrowly win the state.

    • The anti-gay marriage state amendments in Arizona and Florida both look like they're going to be passed as well. Also, Arkansas's ban on adoption for gay couples is also going through.

Obama's success is bittersweet as such deafening blows to civil rights are being done in the same election.

i voted no on amendment 2 in Florida because it violates the civil rights of individuals.

But the amendment 2 is not only a ban on gay marriage but also on any other unions that are not legally considered as marriage.

Amendment 2 could take away existing benefits from all unmarried Floridians.

Amendment 2 could force seniors to choose between important benefits like sharing health care and important government benefits.

Amendment 2 could take away job benefits from university employees and be used as a defense to domestic violence - as in other states which passed similar amendments

so yeah I'm so ashamed to be a Floridian right now, my opinion of governor Christi just went further down into the negative.

Every religion is backing prop 8. And if you want to talk about a religion that is discriminated against talk to the Mormons. They were driven from New York to Utah by mobs of Americans armed with firearms. Their leader was murdered by a mob and the the governor of Missouri issued an extermination order on them in Missouri. They were again raided by the US government while in Utah and thousands were rounded up and put in jail. Why? Polygamy. They were not given the right to marry more than one wife. Although today Mormons now vigorously oppose polygamous marriages, other religious groups are denied the right to marry more than one wife.

The point is, different groups of people believe different things. The same people that support gay marriage may not support polygamy, and vice versa. It doesn't make them bigots. Don't blame the Mormon church, it's the individuals who vote, and they are by and large non-Mormons.

Dabne, without the mormon church this prop would not have passed. You cannot argue against that.

Of all people you would think the Mormon church would understand. They have been persecuted for their past beliefs in what marriage is. You would think that they would support equality and the ability for people to choose for themselves.

This is a sad day for California, and consequently, the rest of the US.

      -----------------------------------------------------------
Bigot: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices ; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance
      ------------------------------------------------------
therefore bigot is the correct word to use!

You don't have to believe the same way but if you choose to implement legal discmination against people who have a different view you are a BIGOT

If you don't want them in your church or your religion that's fine.

In fact and I know I'm going to catch a lot of desention from this

If you wanted to set up a church that only allowed members of one race you should be allowed to do so; However I'm sure people of the excluded races would protest that they should be able to join. As far as I am concerned you should be able to create a religon of 1 person create whatever dogma and traditions you would like as long as the follow the Philosophy of Liberty and atempt to recruit members if they choose to

It is neither unfair, nor discriminatory, to deny the redefining of marriage to continue. Marriage is only between one man and one woman; God says so. What the scriptures say must matter in this country which was built on christian ethics.

God's not real man. Marriage doesn't mean shit anymore. Its a fucking tax benefit, and a title. hardly god given rights. People are over looking the fact that LOVE is the greatest part of this union and that gender shouldn't separate that.
