In part three of our interview with Eric Margolis, Eric talks to Senior Editor Paul Jay about his recent book, American Raj, and the future of Afghanistan and Pakistan. He believes the only way the people of Afghanistan can start rebuilding their country is if the foreign forces pull out. Jay challenges this notion as well as the current US/NATO policies. Margolis says Pakistan is now bankrupt . Eric believes that corruption and bad management alongside social unrest and the threat of an American invasion are contributing to an uncertain future for Pakistan.

Mr Jay introduces a very odd mixture of gross paternalism - we mustn't leave these helpless "ordinary" Afghans the way they are, e.g. "unmodern' - with ironic vapidity - so, to ensure that ordinary Afghans one day are freer we'll just keep bombing them until ---
Until what?
Margolis is right. We aren't bombing Saudi villages because we expect them to respect gender equality or build shopping malls, anywhere else on earth
If we still regard Killing For Jesus as absurd then it is equally ludicrous to bomb populations to improve Female Education and stimulate an accelerated pace of Modernization in a bankrupt state..
I think Mr Jay made an ass of himself on this one.

It sounds like the right thing to do as long as someone doesn't give the Taliban all the money they need to overthrow the government.
