Politkovskaya, a Kremlin critic, was shot dead outside her home in the Russian capital on 7 October, 2006.
Prosecutors say the man accused of pulling the trigger, Rustam Makhmudov, has fled the country, The Associated Press reported. The suspects being tried on murder charges are Sergei Khadzhikurbanov -- a former Moscow police officer -- and Makhmudov's brothers, Ibragim and Dzhabrail.
Politkovskaya came to prominence internationally for exposing the brutality of Russian forces and human rights abuses in Chechnya -- extremely embarrassing for former president, and now prime minister, Vladimir Putin.
In 2004, she was a joint winner of the Olof Palme Prize for human rights work.
Her death was described by media reports in Russia at the time as a contract-style killing. A CCTV camera captured a man in a white baseball cap entering the building a few moments before she was shot three times in the chest and once in the head.

Anybody watch that video of American journalist Amy Goodman being manhandled by police at the RNC for WATCHING a protest FROM A DISTANCE while her press credentials PROVING she had a right to be there were hanging around her neck, while she continually struggled against her wrongful arrest? Yeah, and her cameraman was threatened with arrest, too, if he came any closer.
go to peaceblaster.com and search back awhile, or you can google it, but it's also on youtube. I'd post it here but my work blocks youtube... go figger. lol...

I'm glad brave reporters like Amy Goodman can report in our society without risking their lives. The harassment is way lame, but its not like what's happening to Putin's critics.

Journalism itself isn't as clean a business as everyone would want to think. My wife used to write for a newspaper (lifestyle writer though) before we moved and she mentioned that a lot of her colleagues would rather write political stories than lifestyle. Why? Because they earn a lot more to show the politician in a favorable light through bribes or by blackmailing them with a juicy expose. Writers don't earn a lot to cover all their expenses so most become literary whores for their respective masters.
I wouldn't want to overgeneralize everyone in the field of journalism, but I would roughly say the majority are, especially those in mass media. Can't bite the hand that feeds you right?
Don't just believe everything you read because it was printed out. A healthy dose of doubt keeps your mind thinking; politics is a grand chess game after all and this will definitely be used by one side or the other. There is no such thing as ethics or morality in politics, just economic interest.

A sad reminder that the Russians under Putin are not the peace loving allies we want them to be.

She was murdered on Putin's birthday as some sick, abject present to the man.
