Grass: The History of Marijuana

Image

This film explores the history of the American government's official policy on marijuana in the 20th century. Rising with xenophobia with Mexican immigration and their taste for smoking marijuana, we see the establishment of a wrong headed federal drug policy as a crime issue as opposed to a public health approach. Fueled by prejudice, hysterical propaganda and political opportunism undeterred by voices of reason on the subject, we follow the story of a costly and futile crusade against a substance with questionable ill effects that has damaged basic civil liberties.

    • Excerpt from the Wikipedia suggesting that cannabis may have played a part in Bruce Lee's death which is just about the silliest thing I've ever heard.

Dr. Langford stated after Bruce Lee's death that, "There's not a question in my mind that cannabis should have been named as the presumptive cause of death."

    • What is the difference between alcohol and THC?

I think visits to the ER would be decreased if marijuana were an alternative to alcohol and hard drugs.

    • I saw this movie when it premiered in chicago 8 or 9 years ago. good documentary. and after the flick, a non-related promotional company handed out packs of rolling paper with their website printed on them. I still remember what it said: didunet.com. I just checked, and the company seems to be out of business, but hey... must have been a good marketing scheme! "Won't you think of us when you smoke...?"

    • Operation Swordfish, run by a government agency the FBI and DEA in the 1980s, resulted in the accumulation of billions of dollars in secret accounts from the sale of drugs. This bit of history gave rise to at least one blockbuster with Oscar-winner Halle Berry.
