Depends. Some owners of pets get too old to walk their pets, some see them as a companion. Some just can't be bothered and are too lazy, they're the ones that shouldn't have pets. Where's the commitment?

    • how can that dog's legs even support its body?? surely this constitutes on some level as animal cruelty on the part of the owners, just as parents of obese children (who've made them obese due to bad eating habits rather than a health condition) can be seen as abusive?

    • this is surreal... how do people let their pets get in such ridiculous states anyway? don't get a dog if you can't spare the time to walk it.

    • The owner needs a reality check before going on a reality show. A domestic pet can't choose to go for walks out the house or go to the supermarket. But the owner can.

    • Fat pets are rubbish so it's good news they're getting thin and all that...

But let's not dress this up as anything it isn't. These pets aren't willfully dieting. They're just being fed less. Let one of those cats out for a wee and if a mouse walks past him while he's spraying a hedge he's not going to think "Ooh! Looks tasty... but no, I mustn't! It'll go straight to my hips!"

This competition is just a very weird and over the top way of alleviating the guilt of the owners who let their pets get that porky in the first place. If anything, it sets a bad example. It's saying to people "Stuff your dog with biscuits until it can't tackle stairs then suddenly feed it much less so it gets all thin, you get a nice trophy and all your friends think you did really well."

That seems a little irresponsible to me and I for one call for this filth to be banned. Best Dressed Dog, however, is a competition I'd wholeheartedly support.

    • that is wrong! Apparently it's having an impact on the rhodent community as numbers are on the rise as the puddy cats are too lazy and fat to catch them!!
