Obama chooses Eric Holder to be Attorney General

Sources tell CNN’s Ed Henry and John King Barack Obama has chosen Eric Holder as his nominee for Attorney General.

Holder has accepted the position but must still undergo a vetting process by the Obama transition team.

If confirmed, Holder will become the first African-American to hold the position.

He served as deputy attorney general under Bill Clinton

Newsweek first reported the story.

He was Deputy Attorney General during the Clinton administration and was criticized for his role in the pardon of Marc Rich

During his last week in office, President Bill Clinton pardoned Rich, who had fled the U.S. during his prosecution and was residing in Switzerland. Clinton's eleventh-hour move, along with pardons of his half-brother, Roger, and former business partner Susan McDougal, outraged Republicans and Democrats alike. The Rich pardon sparked an investigation into whether it was bought by the hefty donations Rich's ex-wife, Denise, had given to the Clintons and the Democrats.     • I wasn't very impressed by the Clinton admin. Or maybe they were brilliant and Bill Clinton wasn't listening to them, I couldn't tell you.
      This man has done amazing things. Perhaps the Obama position will give him the power needed have his voice heard.

    • This is the same guy that pardoned Rich a felon, and caused the cubavn kid in Florida to be taken at gun point and returned to cuba. Change??????????????????? Obama is hiring all of Clinton's ex staff. Boy was America fooled by this pontificating Chicago thug.

    • Whats great is that Barack can choose from all people to fill these positions. Previous presidents chose from a small minority of those who fit into the so called "in crowd" of the white chosen few that know how to do what they are told in order to keep the rich rich.

    • Did my wiki homework. Seems like a suited candidate, but as long as he does what is right and respects the Constitution he is fine by me. I am really excited to see how the new Cabinet will play out in this upcoming year. Maybe a bit too excited.

    • After graduating from Columbia Law School Holder worked in the U.S. Justice Department as a trial attorney in the Public Integrity section from 1976 to 1988. He was then appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

      In 1993 Holder was appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia by President Bill Clinton. In 1997, upon the spring retirement of Jamie Gorelick, Clinton nominated Holder to be the next Deputy Attorney General under Janet Reno. Holder was quickly confirmed several months later in the Senate by a unanimous vote. During his confirmation hearing, Holder's opposition to the death penalty was questioned, but he pledged his intention to cooperate with the current laws and Attorney General Janet Reno, saying, "I am not a proponent of the death penalty, but I will enforce the law as this Congress gives it to us."

      Holder was the first Black American to serve in each of those positions. (H is Barbadian American more specifically.)

    • Being a lawyer himself i am convinced that Obama will do everything to restore the governments image as bound by the constitution.

    • When Alberto R. Gonzales was sworn in as the nation's 80th Attorney General on February 3, 2005 their was a tremendous backlash. As we move towards the veting of Eric Holde it will be interesting to see who opposes the selection of Mr. Holde as Attorney General.
