Suheir Hammad, poet and star of "Salt of This Sea" speaks on the effects of 9/11 on the lives of Arab Americans and on her development as a poet. Several clips of her poetry performances illustrate spoken word as a method of political resistance both in Palestine and in the United States.
Suheir Hammad is a Palestinian-American poet, author and political activist. Born to refugee parents in Amman, Jordan, Hammad has spent the majority of her life in Brooklyn, New York City. World renowned for her spoken word and written poetry, Hammad has won multiple awards. Her works include Born Palestinian, Born Black, Drops of This Story, and Zaatar Diva. Hammad is also the star of Salt of This Sea, the first film ever to be written and directed by a Palestinian Woman (Annemarie Jacir).

I remember watching this. I would enjoy it far more if people just didn't clap.

One of the things that caught my thoughts was her desire to communicate truth through her art. She said, "... only what you know ... will translate."
And about her 9/11 poem, "People all over the world related to it, because it was the truth as I know it."
Seems a better use for art than that of persuasion. Maybe even a good measure for all kinds of communication? - 3 years ago

This is great! I really hope to see the Arab and Middle Eastern population be more vocal about these issues because their voices are never heard.

A huge chunk of the population of Jordan are Palestinians, didn't you know?
Also, please don't post in all-caps, it is like yelling, and it is painful to the eyes.
