Big drug firms "block cheap medicine"

Drug companies are blocking or delaying the entry of cheaper generic medicines into the EU, pushing up medicine bills, the European Commission has said.

Their actions cost EU healthcare providers 3bn euros ($3.9bn; £2.5bn) in savings between 2000 and 2007, it said.

It added that drug firms used legal action and multiple patents to stop rivals getting to market.

Drug firms said the "perfectly lawful" measures were justified to protect investment in research and development.

Market access

Generic drug companies - which sell cheaper versions of drugs once the patent has expired - have long complained that it is difficult to get their drugs to market in Europe.

The Commission said that innovators filed multiple applications to stop generic drugs getting to market - in one case, there were 1,300 patents for a single drug.

The report found that owners of original drugs often intervened in national approval procedures for generic medicines.

There were nearly 700 cases of reported patent litigation and more than 200 settlements between brand name drug companies and generic companies.

More than 10% of these settlements limited the entry of the generic drug to the market.

    • it's like they need to be forced to scale back.. focus on cure and research for helping people.. the whole thing is run rampant.... it is a bad example of capitalism .. more corporatism as they are so tight with the FDA it is ridiculous .. the FDA was marketed as a watchdog.. and if it ever was? it has turned out to be a body who's main purpose it so offer some appeasement to convince the public.. don't worry .. your government is looking out for your safety.. trouble is they have just crossed the line. the insanity is apparent.. bad example of capitalism .. .. and then you can add the way pot is illegal?? and they work to limit access to alternative organic health products .. blatantly removing competition of their patented high cost product .. of unknown safety. it has to change?

    • The lines continue to blur between government and corporate interest. The only way to get away with this blocking and delaying action is from an unseemly alliance between politicians and CEOs. This is obscene.

    • these drugs are simply a product and were sold them by doctors, the ultimate fear mongers, fear the basis of all marketing.
      it is all money driven.
yes many drugs are essential for the wellbeing of many people, but there are many medications which are invented as treatments for over medicalised conditions which would often right themselves or which are perfectly normal, F-E-A-R

    • Well of course they are annoyed. If your selling something at a high price and some one else comes out with the same thing at a much lower and more reasonable price questions will be asked. More specifically, why your thing cost so much more then the other people?

    • When you have a country full of sales associates who dehumanize by referring to "customers," "product," and "sales figures." There's little wonder that the people at the top could give two $**** whether you pay more or less, as long as you're still part of the "market" or shall we say people who are dying, living miserably, etc... They still get their bonuses and still crack the whip on the minions for profit maximization albeit through market manipulation, legislation, or any other dog-eat-dog tactic.

    • Big Pharma's got friends in high places. I don't think they'd only too easily hand the keys to the market to some upstart competitors. Capitalism isn't only just fought in the market, you know.

Another thing, we also need to overhaul the patent system to make it fair and practical for future developments. On this front too, though, I don't think the patent holders would all too readily concede.

    • I am a disabled vetern on a limited income and I think it is wrong for drug companies to take advantage of people in need. I hope our new president puts a stop to these outrageous drug prices. The right legislation could help the average family from going broke trying to supply over priced medicine to their loved ones. They need to be stopped and price limits put on all prepscriptions generic or not. The drug companies have ripped off the hard working american long enough. It time to stand up and make a stand against high prices.

I think you are right. they are taking advantage of everyone. Something needs to be done. It is no wonder the economy is in such a turmoil. These drug companys contibute to this by raising prices and causing health care to sky rocket. It is no wonder so many people can not afford health insurance.

    • In a report earlier this year, the U.S. pharmaceutical industry spent 24.4% of the sales dollar on promotion, versus 13.4% for research and development, as a percentage of US domestic sales of US$235.4 billion.

Big Pharma is only interested in selling drugs, not helping people. So, of course, they want to block cheap meds. The mark-up in drugs is astronomical, which is why other companies can make them so cheap.
