U.S. holiday retail sales increased 3 percent to $10.6 billion, Friday from a year earlier, the smallest gain for a “Black Friday” in three years -ShopperTrak RCT Corp. ShopperTrak has estimated that 9.9 percent fewer shoppers will descend on stores this holiday season, producing a sales gain of 0.1 percent. ShopperTrak measures foot traffic in shopping centers and malls using more than 50,000 video devices.

Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners LLC thinks Sales may rise as much as 2 percent for the November- December period after the slow start in the first three weeks of November.

Individuals may spend an average of $616 on holiday gifts this year, down 29 percent from a year earlier, according to a Gallup Inc. poll.

And according to an National Retail Federation Web site press release, online retailers are expected to boost those deals this week, with 83.7% offering Cyber Monday promotions

    • i'm actually surprised that there is any growth year over year. i'm guessing the increased discounts are what created the growth in sales which makes the 3% a horrible figure. if by sales gain they mean compared to last year, the 0.1% will surely be a negative figure when all is said and done.

it's too bad stimulus checks aren't given before the holiday season because they would surely be spent the way the government wishes they were spent. instead of people saving the money, they should spend it to help boost businesses... which we didn't see happen with the bush stimulus checks... time is everything my dear watson.

    • I was thinking this is good news. The public IS buying product. Using the Gallup poll, if half the us population spent $600 dollars this season, the gross sales would be $180,683,968,200. That is allot of dough. Even if all the stores only make 10% profit off all sales. Bringing the net profits of these stores to $18,068,396,820. Sweet deal of you ask me.

    • I hope you're right Anglcazn, unfortunately what I see are desperate retailers... I've never seen so many sales so early in the Christmas shopping season.
