Me...with my dumb luck...planned a vacation there this weekend. We were stuck in our hotel as the lobby was underneath water. The streets were waist deep. It was a fascinating thing to watch as the tide rolled out and the water dissipated. Regardless, the Venetians took it all in stride and were busy cleaning up the mess. It is an amazing and beautiful place.

If city's are located at sea level or below it's only natural for them to become flooded with sea levels rising due to glacial melting and other country's snow pack receding.

As predicted, besides New Orleans brief time under water Venice is going to be in deeper water by 2020.

How sad . . . Luckily, I was able to visit Venice back in 2005.
Whether it's logical or not, Venice's charm lies in the fact that it is the "City of Water." I just hope they can find a way to preserve that charm for longer. - 3 years ago

The Venetian mayor should add to his advisory: "And if you do insist on visiting, BYOB (Bring Your Own Boat)!" =P

It's just going to keep getting worse and worse as sea levels rise due to climate change. I wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing about widespread flooding in coastal cities in the next twelve months. Just look at what happened in Brazil just a few days ago.

Why only look at Venice? I can't speak for the Mediterranean Sea, but the Adriatic is experiencing higher tides, 5m higher. This has nothing to do with Venice in specific, but you can use this as an example... just don't limit your view on the situation to one city in Italy.

A city that has made MILLIONS on tourism for decades...I have to say WHY? did they not take some precautions. Its not like it hasnt happened time and again.
Sorry, but my town looked worse after Ivan....lots of homes had only 'concrete slabs' left plus every other tree was downed. No stores, gas, or phones/electricity for almost 3 weeks. The point is, once a disaster of this proportion happened, we rebuilt, sold and moved away from the water.

Well apparently they are going to try to stop the worst floods by installing floodgates at the mouth of the three inlets to Venice's lagoon instead of trying to fix the damage to the lagoon itself. Whether this works or not remains to be seen. I hope it does.

The people there are so resilient and I think they know this is going to be happening more frequently and will prepare for it. I believe it is part climate change, but also part because Venice is sinking. At the pace it is going I too wonder if it will be here in 50 years. But again, the people are resilient there and used to the water, so I hope they will find a way to deal with this as Venice is truly an historic treasure.

Many people believe that Venice was literally built on the water, but it was actually built on the marshes and swamps in the lagoon. Some historians believe that Venice was founded by the refugees of the Roman city of Aquileia, after the city was sacked and destroyed by Attila in 454.
The original builders of the city used logs and implanted them into the ground to provide a foundation for the buildings in the marsh. Venice's location far out into the sea gave the city protection and enabled it to become a powerful medieval seafaring state.

I visited last a couple of years ago, it is beautiful and it does smell, agreed DonkeyPong. Furthermore, Murano glass is for sale EVERYWHERE, you can't get away from it. Bit too touristy, weird that people still choose to live there I think.

They knew this was going to happen, thats why they were going to build the dams at the front of the city. Thats what happens when you live on top of water.

The venetians seem to be prepared for something like this because from what I saw on the pictures, most of them just continue on with their routine... I hope Venice doesn't sink or collapse before I get a chance to visit, always wanted to see the city...
