Vatican trashes first UN declaration of LGBT human rights

Image

A proposed United Nations declaration that would condemn “discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity” is being trashed by the Vatican. This is just disgusting. Its HUMAN rights we're talking about.

    • Let's coordinate a televised debate between Mr. Pope over here and Rachel Maddow on identity politics... It may not be fair to put someone up against someone so wise and powerful, but I'm sure the Pope will do a fairly decent job. :)

    • And for the freaks that spaz about sex and priests...
      FYI:
In October, the Church said it was considering psychological testing for prospective priests to screen out candidates “with strong homosexual tendencies” and heterosexuals “unable to control their sexual urges.”

And need I remind you again, that less than 1% of priests violated anyone sexually. Out of millions. And these men are not priests anymore.

    • 1. The Pope has no vote.

      2. Focus on the TRUE ISSUE:

More than 80 ISLAMIC nations have laws denying or limiting LGBT civil rights.
Some ISLAMIC countries impose the death penalty on homosexuality while others have lengthy prison sentences.

Read that twice if you have to.

Apparently The governator dad was a nazi member, and young Arnold ain't that bad really...for a republican.
Nah it's the strict catholicism you wanna watch out for.

Tell us, what exactly do you know of him, his teachings and more that upsets you so? Besides of this one article and that he looks really funny?

Please elaborate. As he is the most progressive Pope of the times. He is freaking amazing, even if he does look like he works for the underground!

In essence, we are all sparks of consciousness and time is running out for the Catholic Church.

    • This is very unsurprising. Tolerance is selective, especially for those who send messages of "love," "peace," and "harmony" during the holidays.

You are aware that LESS THAN ONE PERCENT of priests committed the acts that you are talking about. And young children were usually not involved.

Meanwhile millions of priests that did their jobs with vows of poverty, and did works for God, for the sake of helping others.

Because of people like you they are now not accepting homosexual priests, because the public may fear they will molest children. Is that typical of homosexual men? I hardly think so.

All priests involved in any kind of improper sexual activity were excommunicated from the church. And now there are programs in place to insure that that doesn't re-occur.

I think if it hadn't taken so long for the issue to be addressed, there would be more trust. I don't attend a church, so it wouldn't matter if I trusted them or not either way. I do feel remorse to the fact that the actions did hurt so many and that it made them question their faith, but it's what happened. Things like that aren't easily forgotten; not by the people who suffered the atrocities and spoke out, nor to those that experienced the same and remained silent. Even people that never experienced those same things find they do not trust the same as they used to. It's not just because of "people like this or people like that", it's because it was ignored and there is no trust that it would be addressed properly if it were to happen again; regardless of programs in place.

    • This is why I am atheist, these are actions that cause global effects around the world and start religious infractions against other countries. They insult the general will of the World by invoking such actions. GOD is a huge money maker, TV Shows (BIG SCAMS, lots of ripping people off), Big Churches with Private Jets, and Luxurious Homes and Lifestyles, the all represent the SAME GOD and this is what is leading the rebellion from the East and other strong practicing faith countries. The west has clouded many future generations because of its’ pop culture, religion is just some form of moral practices in America not Practice what you Preach, but look at leaders like this, crazy shit.

Agreed. I just read in "Society Without God" that Athiests (as a collective) are #4 in global numbers relative to "believers". Christians came in at 2 billion. Muslims at 1.2 billion. Hindus at 900 million. Athiests/agnostics at 750 million.

There's probably more of us out there than we know. And many of us are starting to wake up and see this nonsense for what it is.

    • We are born male and female that's gender, there is no third gender.

Some of us are white, some of us are black and some of us have coloring in between, something we are born with
and can't be changed ..our ethnic heritage.

Being Gay is neither of these.

No one can tell if one person or another is gay, unless of course you tell them.

I believe that most human beings realize that their sexual identity is only a PART of them and NOT THE SUM TOTALITY OF THEIR HUMANITY.

      Get it?

We, as individuals are more, much more than our sexual
      identity!

The fact that I'm white is not the "SUM TOTALITY OF MY HUMANITY," but it definitely has affected who I am as a person today, simply because of the specific society I grew up in.
People are "much, much more" than the color of skin they were born with.

Your logic jumps around here. Takes what it likes and leaves the rest. Presumes much.

For example, you presume that homosexuality is something that "can be changed" / "is not inborn," when you obviously are just as ultimately clueless as the rest of us as to what "causes" it - more so, because I assume you have no experience whatsoever with being gay.

right, and we as individuals are also more than our racial, religious, gender, age, and whatever else identity. how does this prove your point? how does being more than an identity justify the denial of rights to humans?

one's gender specifies masculinity and femininity socially and culturally, not biologically.

i may be able to tell what someone's color is, but i can't necessarily tell what nationality they are. does that mean that's fair game for discrimination?

your comparisons don't hold water. try again.

Not really sure where you re going with this. What does gender have to do with anything? And more importantly, why should gay people have to hide who they are to pass as "normal." Come on. Grow some tolerance.

I can get behind most of what you said. Taking it a step further - we need to acknowledge the differences between: sex, gender, and sexuality. Sex being male, female, intersexed (biological), gender being feminine, masculine, androgynous, and sexuality being gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, straight (physical attraction). What makes the queer community so hard to understand is its ambiguity -- the fact that sex, gender, and sexuality do not always match up in a specific way.

    • "Archbishop Celestino Migliore... said in the statement that the declaration would discriminate against states which support traditional marriage.

'If adopted, they would create new and implacable discriminations … For example, states which do not recognize same-sex unions as ‘matrimony’ will be pilloried and made an object of pressure,' Migliore said."

      uhh... so?

what is this "discrimination" against a _state_ (huh???) as compared to discrimination against millions of people? this is merely a desperate attempt at keeping the flame of fear alight as this movement is gaining even more and more momentum.

    • Not surprised that the Catholic church not only decided to not support the declaration of LGBT human rights, but to condemn it. I just wish that the Catholic church would eventually accept those of us who are gay and not hate us for no reason. It would also be nice if that was sometime in my life, but I'm not putting a bet on that.

    • Yoshi1:

Marriage is a sacrament. That is their only beef. Sacraments are extremely important. They cannot be changed. They are covenants between people and God. Marriage is a sacrament between one man one woman and God, and not even a civil divorce will dissolve it in the Church. Yeah it's complicated.

Other than that, I think they are cool with you guys.

Oh and they don't want overtly gay priests now, due to the PUBLIC fear of child (16-17yr old) molestation by gay men, as that was usually the case in the abuse charges.

I think that is a shame. And that people that bash the catholic church for gay priests having affairs with younger boys 20-30 years ago should get educated of the details and drop it.

The priests involved were less that 1 percent of millions of priests world wide and they are not priests anymore.

Judging by that statement id say that you are a straight man correct? Do you remember the day you chose to be straight? I dont think you do. That is because being gay isnt a choice. Simple as that.

Seriously, if being gay is a choice, then so would being straight, and if your excuse for being straight is because "it's right" then you should question your own sexuality. I'm not gay, but I have gay friends, and it's obvious it isn't a choice.

Kaecvtionr, why does it mean so much to you that I am a lesbian or that my friends are gay? What harm or discomfort does it give you, how does it directly effect your life (I am curious)?
I know that I love my partner very much, more than I ever imagined I could love anything; all I want is to be there for her, to wake up next to her and hear her silly stories, to live a life with the same basic rights and freedoms heterosexuals have. For goodness sake, I just want to make breakfast and read the paper with her!!!!
I am not attacking, I am just wondering; I feel if you go to extra lengths to condemn me, you should at least explain yourself.

      Have a good day

If there is a god and this god is indeed moral, I highly doubt the Vatican represents well. In 1962 Pope John 23rd directed silence to all Catholic Bishops regarding the known priest sex offenders. I'm sure Jesus would have down the same (sarcasm implied).

Why we give any organized religion any credence in this age of enlightenment baffles me.

Their hipocracy is unfathomable---their world started with incestual procreation, their priests are pedopheliacs, but homosexuality, thats the unforgivable sin? WTF.
