Republican Chambliss wins Georgia Senate seat

US Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss has won re-election in a run-off in Georgia, dashing the Democrats' hopes of achieving a "super-majority".

They have 58 Senate seats, but needed 60 to stop any Republican attempts to block legislation with a "filibuster".

The only undecided state is Minnesota, where a recount is under way.

Mr Chambliss and his Democratic opponent were forced into a run-off after neither reached 50% in a three-way race during November's election.

The Democrats won expanded majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and their candidate, Barack Obama, was elected president.

During the campaign, Mr Chambliss promised voters he would act as a "firewall" against a Democrat-controlled Washington.

The Democrats already have 56 Senate seats plus two independents who have promised to vote with them.

    • I'm with you Scarabus, the man is a worm. He will not figure as prominanty as he thinks though. The people are expecting swift and effective relief from the economic oppression and government corruption of the Republicans and they will react if they don't get it.

Too bad he won, but in the big picture, it doesn't matter.

    • I don't care which party Chambliss represents. The most important issue isn't party affiliation, but adherence to at least minimal standards of human decency; civic responsibility; and support for honest elections, based on issues, not dishonorable and deceitful character assassination.

The draft-dodging bastard who accused triple-amputee Vietnam war hero Max Cleland of cowardice, and who ran totally dishonorable and deliberately deceitful ads about Cleland's votes, has absolutely no place in public life. None. Nowhere. That he has been re-elected is shameful.

    • For the record, I grew up 12 miles away from the nearest town (Dayville) which then had a population of 237 people in central Oregon.

My rommies are from Tennessee, my brother's band is from Georgia, and some of my BEST friends are from Virginia, S. Carolina, and Georgia all of which would have a great laugh at my comments knowing that I'm a joker.

Differences of opinion are what make the world go round.

I wish you all the best and I hope my joking manner didn't mess up anyone's day.

ps. Chambliss is still a douche and equal rights are still going to be on my "agenda" if you will...

    • Here we go debating along party lines again. Stay on point, please. The focus of the article is that the senate will not have a filibuster proof edge by the democratic party. No big deal, because they have a majority in both houses. The real question is, will both parties put there petty squabbles aside and act in the best interest of the American people? Campaign season season is over, it's time to go back to work.

    • Wow, even with a Democratic President, a majority democratic senate and house, I would say the liberals are the sorest losers. They could not accept the fact that all the Afro-Americans that came out to vote for Obama, voted down gay marriage. What the hell do you want, a authoritarianship in this country? I use the term liberal/socialist because I am a democrat and like other democrats, we accept the rule of majority rule. Grow up!!

    • Georgia has no patent on idiots. They exist in ALL states. Remember the Governor calling the Eastern part of PA rednecks? This is a slanderous statement about the South.
