It's a government coup... Canadian style

Image

When Canada wants to bring down a government, we go about it a little bit differently than some other countries. When we wanted to throw off the shackles of English rule, we asked politely. The Queen was nice enough to give us the right to change our Constitution without having to go and ask the Queen again. I suspect she just wanted us to finally leave her alone.

Now, after disappointing election and a go-nowhere session of Parliament, Canada's left wing parties have finally grown some balls and decided they've had enough. They've banded together to ask the Queen's representative, the Governor General, to allow them to take over.

For those of you who don't obsessively follow Canadian politics (ie: 99% of you), here's the rundown of what has happened so far.....

    • So and UH what now? Are you neighbors UK citizens or what? Are you free or chattels of Britain?
I guess I don't understand. The only thing I can make out is you learn real well from GWB and company.

    • I'm for the coalition. If they force us to have another election, I call upon all canadians to refuse to vote. It'd be a three ring circus with three votes in four years. We don't need to put up with that crap just because the government is really a daycare and the kids can't share properly.

    • Mild? I know two Canadians and they are far from mild. more like self centered and judgmental.

But that's not anything.....not all Canadians are like that. I hope they are the exception to the apparent rule.

    • Gotta love the Queen. Although she is way overdue and I think it is time to move on without the Queen, which I see happening in the near future as many politicians are not happy about the Governor General's recent decision.

    • LOL about the NDP... all i know is.. I didn't vote for 'em. and that was for a reason.

    • actually, i think it will make a huge difference. the only reason we had an election early was because the gov't was ineffectual. harper simply couldn't put in the policies he wanted to because he was in the minority. if the NDP and Liberals get together - apparently the bloq is just in there for namesake - they could actually get things DONE.

my only concern is that the NDP have some great ideas, and I hope they won't get steamrolled by the liberals.

I suppose I should catch up on parties don't know much about the NDP... I've lived off and on in Calgary for the past 5 years.

Would it be fair to assume that holding the Liberal party back in this last re-election was the freshness of the sponsorship scandal?

Maybe it's all the bi-partisan talk I've been hearing for the past 3 months down here, but I would rather see some cooperation rather than grabs at power ...

    • I can't see this doing much good. They had an election like what... two months ago? Let it play out...

Separatism is bunk. So is excessive socialism. However, glad to see the Liberals taking a stand against Conservatives... I just don't think they (Conservatives) have been doing that bad of a job...

Well i get the CBC and the everything else. Alberta is pretty against the coalition because we stand to loose the most with the coalition. Most our jobs are tied into the Oil or financing the oil industry. The coalition wants to heavily tax these companies to save jobs in Ontario and Quebec. So in the end Alberta will loose a lot of jobs while Ontario and Quebec or stagnant.
The Liberals took us from boom to bust literally overnight with the NEP and people don't want to see that happen again.
If it were to happen Alberta would never again trust Canada and would see a huge cry to separate.

    • Here in Calgary there seems to be finally a bit of a sense of calm. However large protests are planned for Saturday. Which really there are never protests here. 71% of Albertan's are against the coalition. I called into a talk radio show to voice my opinion and had to wait 3 hours to get through.

    • Is that the new flag? It's very descriptive. But it would tempt Iran, or Syria and just insurgents from all over that land to go play house there! And make plans to kill lots and lots of infidels! snap!

      @ arcticspirit:
You know it's not an actual coup, right? It's a coalition of three separate parties attempting to gain control of the cabinet... They're not really overthrowing the government. It's perfectly legal within the bounds of the Canadian Constitution.

Correct me if i'm wrong dank800 or div...

Well thats what our political pundits are calling it. Really all a coup is an overthrow of power. The big question we have, is to decide whether it is constitutionally acceptable to do this. It has never been done before in Canada so there is no legal precedent.

Some people believe the creator of harry potter is the richest woman in England..yeah right.
The royal family are the owners of SHELL company which means oil.....ring any bells .

umm, well you may need to know that there are a lot of Canadians who look up to the Queen. As well many British residents of Canada. Our largest immigrant population in Calgary used to be Chinese from Hong Kong and now it is people from the UK again.

ok... why are you so mad? seriously, take a deep breath. you clearly know nothing about the Canadian separation from Britain. Yes, we are part of the common wealth. We aren't called a colony anymore so....

but really, why are you so angry? over reaction much?

      Tayllerand,

Have you always been so much of an arrogant blowhard or are you in training for the next election?

Sorry your side took the wipeout so hard,

Keep up the bad work. It suits you. And next time you're in the UK? Be sure to mouth off in a London pub.

    • Finally, a political system as confusing as our own. Are our good neighbors as tired of the entitled class calling the shots as we are? When working people state their views it is called class warfare. When the upper crust use there money for influence it is called politics.

    • Unfortunately, in America a vote of no confidence will get you put on a list somewhere as a subversive anti-American. Do it twice, and win a free trip to git-mo.
