A cure for alcoholism??

Dr Olivier Ameisen, 55, one of France's top heart specialists, says he overcame his own addiction to alcohol by self-administering doses of a muscle-relaxant called baclofen.
He has now written a book about his experience - Le Dernier Verre (The Last Glass) - in which he calls for clinical trials to test his theory that baclofen suppresses the craving for drink.
Widespread media coverage of his book in France has led to a rush of demands from alcoholics for similar treatment, and some doctors have reported unexpected successes after prescribing it.
But many other specialists are sceptical, warning of the dangers of so-called miracle cures.

Hit a meeting. That's the best way to stop. Get a sponsor, move into a sober living house and quit hanging around other alcoholics. It isn't easy but keep coming back it works.

Alcohol addiction now receives the same treatment as drug addiction. The symptoms are the same, problems are the same. The craving is not the only problem.
Addiction is both physical and psychological. The only "cure" is abstinence. Anyone can stop. Very few can maintain it. There are lots of alcholics walking around that don't realize it.
The desire to remain clean & sober is paramount for the long term. This is a whole life decision. Falling off the wagon is only one drink away; even after 30 years of sobriety.
So far, AA and it's offshoot sisters offer the only real hope for an alcholic/addict that desires sobriety or being straight. Long term involvement in your group helps keep your problem in your mind with the added benefit of being able to help others suffering the same problems.
I don't think there's a substance that could take the place of that.

I am reading your responses, and just by it you can tell who is either an alcoholic or has somebody close who is. I am watching somebody's strugle on daily basis. It affects your social life, your food habits, your favorite hobbies - not just for you but also for people around. It is a strugle. YOur best bet - be surrounded by people who UNDERSTAND what you are going through. How naive to think about miracle cure - I wish! AA and only AA can keep you sober.

I really don't have much time for people who deliberately misunderstand the meaning of the word 'addict.'
Cravings sent me back to tobacco after 7 years of not touching the stuff. 4 1/2 years ago Smoking Aversion Laser Acupuncture freed me from craving nicotine : someything I wouldn't have believed without the experience.
But yeah. Until or unless something is found to kill chemically induced dependency for whatever substance, quitting 'cold turkey' is attractive.
That's not always true for drugs, though. Some things will wreck your health if you don't drag out the process of withdrawal under medical supervision. - 3 years ago

Replacing one addiction with another is not the best answer here. I'm not sure which is worse: a pill junkie or an alcoholic.
(Not to offend anyone, I struggle with addiction myself).

Within certain circles un fettered by the maw of organized medicine, the utilization of L-Glutamine (an amino acid isolated to powder form) has a marked ability to RENDER INERT the cravings associated with alcoholism... I personally REVERSED my heart arrhythmia with only $200 worth of herbs, vitamins and supplements at the instruction of a nutritional doctor.

the key is to become a higher functioning alcoholic . hit the gym hard , up your metabolism , decrease body fat and you won't be able to drink as much without getting sick . even if you have to pre-mix your booze into a water bottle and carry it to the gym with you , go .
if an "alcoholic" can't make this step then they don't have the kind of genes this world needs. - 3 years ago

Substance abuse seeking behavior I believe is linked to DNA. So once you are free from one thing, chances you will go to something different.
I am working with someone who has the worst time. He goes from one thing to the next. Just cycles thru things. Either they stop giving the desired effects, or for one reason or another he cannot maintain taking what ever it is he was taking.
Yeah, the cure isn't in a pill.

There is no "cure" for alcoholism. There is no such thing as miracle that suddenly lets alcoholics not crave alcohol ever again. Like heroine addicts, they will struggle with it their entire life, even if they are using a drug to help them handle it better.

Humans have an on-board mechanism for the "cure". That mechanism is called REBT or refusing to be victimized by your thoughts. Forget about the AA disease model, it's lie!
But suboxone is another drug that can help people cope with strong urges and cravings to "use".
Whatever it takes!

I am very close to somebody who is in AA for the last 22 years and I can't believe what I hear - from being addicted to alcohol become addicted to some drug when you are not even sure about long time side effects? The only proven thing is AA. It is a life time survival journey and there is no miracle treatment. sorry.

Well, there is no miracle treatment yet. You can't just say there will never be a cure. Think of all the things that modern medicine has cured. To say "Ok, going to a weekly meeting seems to manage it, good enough." Is to be ok with the suffering instead of continuing research and, one day, have medical scientists say "Alright, you don't need to suffer anymore. Just take this once a day for a month and you're cured."
All AA does is switch out one addiction for another. I know, I have a couple friends who are going through this very thing.

Yanno, I was raised in AA. It's on my baby calendar, first meeting at 2 weeks. My mom's 21 years sober, I'm 18, so do the math.
I completely understand why it doesn't work for so many people. You really have to immerse yourself in the program and it really becomes your whole life. Personally I think people in AA are a little creepy. Lol. And I have the right to say that, I've grown up around it. I KNOW that program.
However, I recently met someone who considers himself sober, goes to meetings only every so often (whereas most go at least once a week), so everyone's different. My point is, AA is not the answer. If I ever became an alcoholic, and I had to spend the rest of my life in that program...........I'd rather be an alcoholic lol.
I'm glad they're coming up with new things for alcoholism.Alcoholics getting sober is very crucial. My life would have been extremely different had my parents met in a bar rather than an AA meeting. (true story)

nogoodmaster & bwittny,
I dont think that either of the 2 quite understand why most alcoholics spend the rest of their days in AA.
IT IS NOT SO MUCH THAT THEY HAVE TOO, AS MUCH AS IT IS BEINGTHERE FOR THAT NEW PERSON THAT COMES THEOUGH THE DOOR THAT NEEDS HELP.
The cornerstone of anybody beating drugs and alcohol is getting out of your selfish ways and try helping other people. I have double-digit years clean, and some of the best, open-minded people that I have either been blessed to meet are in AA. Alot of you nay-sayers would be surprised to know that many people who you cherish and admire are devoted members of AA.There might be a cure to help people stop drinking, but thats where the cure would stop. What about the self-centeredness and defaults of character . I have never met a person who could not have bettered themselves with a 12-step program, in some capacity or another.

I guess I was a little hard on the program..
I think it teaches good values (if you learn them correctly, I'm sure we both know people can take the BB and twist it however..) I'm extremely grateful for the program because of what it's done for my parents. What I don't like, is when people in AA think it is the only answer for everyone.
You're basically screwed in the whole program if you're an atheist. What if I don't believe in any "higher power", and you're trying to tell me I'm not going to be able to cure my alcoholism unless I believe in some sort of God?
It is a very flawed program, and there should be many more options. That's all I'm saying.
I'm never against how people want to live their own lifes. If AA is for you, awesome. It's not for everyone. Also, you can learn to not be self centered, to make amends, to help other people...all those things should be normal things. It's great that there's a program to teach people these things, but obviously you could do it without.
Growing up in AA has taught me tremendous things about being powerless over certain things, making amends, and reaching out to other people. - 3 years ago
