9/11 families protest fairness of Gitmo trials

NEW YORK – Two dozen family members of Sept. 11 victims signed a letter Wednesday saying they don't believe in the fairness of the military trials of five men charged with orchestrating the terrorist attacks, and some suggested their opinions cost them attendance at the proceedings.

While the family members who attended this week's proceedings at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba expressed support for the tribunals, they also said "that many of us do not believe these military commissions to be fair, in accordance with American values, or capable of achieving the justice that 9/11 family members and all Americans deserve," according to the letter released by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Robin Theurkauf, whose husband was killed at the World Trade Center, said she wanted to attend the proceedings but was denied a spot in a lottery for family members.

"I testified for the defense in the (Zacarias) Moussaoui trial," Theurkauf said, referring to the convicted Sept. 11 conspirator. "I think I was skipped over because of that."

    • I would confirm the 9/11 families were even a part of this rove/cheney scam. Anyone who believes that these gwb thugs would not stoop to using their first victims families to counter their final victims in gitmo. Also, anyone who trust the military that is in place currently, needs to recognize who the real terrorist are in iraq, The higher ranks are the real criminals and cowards that enabled our young soldiers to die for a crime, not a lie, a crime, AN ILLEGAL INVASION OF IRAQ.

    • The US military allows the media a rare glimpse into life at the terror detention camp in Cuba. Worldwide, many think this place is an abomination.

Will closing this camp be the first signal to the world that there has been real Obama-Change?

    • This so so infuriating, everyone deserves the right to a fair trial, it is one of the most basic human rights and I find it so ironic that these American families are going on about how the trials are not in accordance with American values, when surely values = fair trial!!

Obviously it's terrible what happened to the "9/11 families" but legal proceedings should not be sacrified for their anger and hurt.

The recent positive step forward in getting Guantanamo detainees trials should not be deterred by the families.

    • what infuriates me as an "AMERICAN" or rather as a human being is that we don't get truth.

We ask a question, and whats our answer?
      pshh...another question....

      forced confessions...torture tactics.
Cant you see whats going on?

Regardless of their agenda, are you arguing that the Gitmo trials, or lack thereof, and subsequent imprisonment of hundreds of people without trial amounts to "justice?"

Yes, there are many who are considered to be a threat. But, is it conceivable that there are a few innocents as well, considering the Afghan situation in which massive "rewards" were promised in turn for turning "combatants" in? Do those people, as well as others who are being held without charge, not deserve justice?
