Beer cases sell for $170 after handouts

A BLACK market for booze appears to be blossoming as a result of the Federal Government's stimulus package, with police saying cartons of beer are selling for $170 each and two-litre casks of wine going for $50.

In Broome, in Western Australia’s north, an increased amount of public intoxication – particularly before the town’s pubs open for daily trading – has caused concern from local authorities.

In communities across the state, authorities and publicans have placed restrictions on the sale of alcohol in a bid to limit the impact of people using Federal Government payments of up to $1400 on booze.

Those restrictions include liquor stores staying shut until 3pm each day and the sale of wine casks and cartons limited to one person per day.
