Page was propelled to stardom when she posed for Playboy as Miss January 1955. Soon her image was gracing playing cards, record albums and bedroom posters across the country.
She stopped modeling in 1957, retreated from the public spotlight and turned to religion. She enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in the 1980s, as a new generation of fans became obsessed with her legacy.

I saw that she passed away this week from an article I viewed in my newspaper. She was a icon and because of her -many have tried to imitate her style and uniqueness. She will definitely be missed by those who loved to view her beauty and appeal as the pinup girl of the ages. In her interviews she never liked to be photographed because she always wanted to public to remember her as she was. God bless and R.I.P. Bettie Page

While I appreciate Bettie Page's impact on popular culture and American sexuality I think its interesting how much of her life has been ignored by the press in the past few days.
After retiring from modeling Bettie Page rediscovered religion and became devoted to her Christian faith and spreading the word of god. (Anyone who has seen the movie "The Fabulous Bettie Page" will remember this)
Also, it is commonly believed that she was sexually abused by her biological father throughout her childhood. Her detachment from her work and near disregard for her safety during shoots, alone with men indicate that this was very likely. While she never acknowledged this theory as fact it is a shame and a disrespect to her memory to remember her only in terms of the 7 years she spent modeling. Acting out sexually is a very common result of sexual abuse. While I don't deny her impact on society it troubles me that a sexual revolution was born out of the career of a woman who was very likely a victim herself.

A true American icon.
Style. Grace Beauty. PolishSex appeal… there was none better and none today could match her level of energy and level of perfection.
It's a shame she has become more of a character of herself in recent year with the 'Hot Topic crew.' Maybe someday they'll wake up and understand her as another human.
God bless. - 3 years ago
