Salton Sea: Hey Days

The Salton Sea sits tucked away in a hot desert valley in the south east corner of California. It was created in 1905 when an out of control irrigation project re-routed the Colorado River into the desert for 18 months. The area soon bloomed and became a famed resort destination, rivaling nearby Palm Springs.

But today, the place is a virtual ghost town, as the Sea suffers from a host of environmental problems due to its very high salt content.

In this pod, we'll take a look at the town of the Salton Sea in its hey day, when it was THE hot vacation destination.

    • I can't wait to watch the whole doc. I used to drive up to Salton Sea every week in the early 90's. My boyfriend and his mother moved there and he worked at the only gas station there in Salton Sea Beach, as well as the very run down restaurant/hotel in Salton City. It was pretty much already a ghost town by that time, but I'm so curious to know what it looks like these days. It's really sad to see how beautiful it once was and know that it will never be that way again.

    • I was born in Palm Springs back in '74, and I was raised in Cathedral City. I have some good memories of fishing with the family at the Salton Sea.

The last trip we took out there in the early 80's, I remember scooping dead fish off the water with a net and being puzzled at my parents and grandparents for telling me to put them back in the water. I thought the whole purpose was to catch fish! :D

I've seen this documentary before and it is outstanding. I actually watched it with my parents. It was heartbreaking for us, but still outstanding. An amazing story.

    • Reminds me of the HP Lovecraft story "The Doom that came to Sarnath."

It was made on accident by man, it can't have been expected to last forever.

    • And there's a great film called "The Salton Sea" with Val Kilmer (post-Willow) with heavy tattoos and nonsense. Great movie. :]

    • I camped here a few years ago when I went to the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. It's definitely an interesting place to visit. It's a beach resort, ghost town.

    • The story of the Salten Sea is a metaphor for the decline of America, and should serve as a warning of how one mico-environment was destroyed by man and nature in the space of a mere decade.

    • How interesting! I went to Palm Springs one time for a short while when I was on a road trip across the Southwest. But I never stopped by Salton City.

A shame to see something like that disappear the way it did. Its very similar in a lot of ways to what is happening to the Aral Sea in Central Asia...
