Russian warships bound for Cuba in new show of strength

A group of Russian warships will from December 19-23 visit the Communist island of Cuba, a long-time adversary of the United States and Moscow's ally in the Cold War, the Russian navy said on Monday.
"This will be the first visit to Cuba by Russian warships since the Soviet era," the Russian naval headquarters said in a statement.

The destroyer Admiral Chabanenko and two other ships will visit Havana in what the navy described as a "significant practical step towards strengthening and developing ties between the two states' navies."

Russian ships have been touring countries close to US waters in what is seen as a riposte to Washington's own moves in Russia's Soviet-era sphere of influence, including US naval deployments in the Black Sea.

Last month President Dmitry Medvedev visited Cuba on a four-country Latin American tour intended to revive what he called "privileged relations" that existed between Moscow and several Latin American states in the Cold War.

    • From what I've seen in documentaries the US military now has the most technically advanced military in history. Tanks that are very fast and can shoot on the move with deadly accuracy, smart laser guided bombs, technically advanced fighters, submarines, warships etc. Our military has been computerized from one end to the other. And there is many more ingenious inventions on the drawing board. Most of these advances have been proudly displayed to the public. The Russians know we have a lethal Army, Navy, and Marines. They know the US has had the opportunity to test and refine their equipment during both Iraq wars and at Afghanistan Our armed forces are formidable. They are trying to throwing their renewed power into the world theater by threatening the biggest power, the USA. This is historically typical of Russian behavior even though it got them nowhere during the past century. I would think a good strategy for now is to ignore them. We know picking a fight with the US would be insanity and I believe they know it too. But when bullies think they can push someone around and get by with it they can't resist trying it. So I think there is a line we shouldn't allow them to cross and the world will be in serious danger if it comes to stopping their advances into our territories. If it has to be done the US cannot afford not to meet the challenge.

    • Thanks for some of the responses.

I think that Russia is scared ! After everyone sees the US in Iraq ... Most countrys thought we would have been ran out of Iraq, and other places.

Obama, I think his goal was to show how easy it was to take out the world trade center,,, of course with the help of others! Obama has told the world that they can win by hitting here.

The US was showing the world how smart bombs are,
a warning to all inside US and OUT side.

Tech wise think of this we have the ronald regan ship

this ship is a Nuke ship, does not have to refuel for 50 years ......this ship can go anywhere in the world.

Nobody has a ship like this!

I read A news article saying in about 10 more years
the US ARMY will have invisible suits!!!!!!!

Can you imagine President of Russia is in his office and he tells his staff ok, attack the US, then out of no where 10 marines apear out of nowhere ! And arrest Him ! Wham!

      Thats why there are scared!

Who knows they might have those suits NOW!

Now if we can have one global Goverment, And get every one to pay into Socal Seurity etc,

then WE could have a nice party !

Right now the world is broke

BUT IF WE CAN GET MORE PEOPLE TO PAY INTO our system !

Just think if everyone in china payed FED and state etc TAXes to the US

we would not have to raise taxes ..hey we might have some $$$ let over to blow!

Thats why we let people into the US , so it means lower taxes for us. hmmmm Not sure if i like that!

    • All the more reason to bring our sheat home. Start protecting our own borders, get our own house in order, the Russian's smells weakness. By the same token Running our ships and planes all around everyday is burning up fuel and money and probably not helping the pollution or climate problem either. When will the citizens of the world grow up? Russia and America have more on their plates than they can handle, and both have resources and land for expansion if need. So why do both countries have to tempt fate. You slap a bull enough times and he is going to charge you. (Wild Hogs 2007) hahha. Any how Jeez, talk about stuck in the 1970's. And Obama has already got something to prove after all McCain and Biden said. It's like a Nightmare on Elm Street movie, SOMEONE HIT EJECT PLEASE!!!!!

    • It aways amazes me how world leaders can act like children. "If you come onto my side of the play pen I'll come onto yours ". It might be cute if when they play these games they weren't risking the beginning of a nuclear war.

    • WW3 in the making! The last time, the stock market went broke, WW2 started about 5 -10 years later. This Stock crash is now and bigger, and Russia Has alot of money in the Market!

Now Russia gets hit on the oil too, cannot sell there oil.

Japan started a war after we cut them off from buying oil from us.

I think The US Gov is waiting for them to hit us !

      Hopefully they will blink!

Iraq war was for practice. To get ready!

I hope this will not happen... I am not hopefull.

Yes, so the US should just stop provoking Russia, and Russia in turn should not provoke the US.

And there will be no problems.

    • You start by creating simultaneous world celebrations, then you create international sports leagues.

One thing the international corporate structure is good for is infrastructure, so let them pay the R&D costs as part of the franchise agreement, then a government-type template system steps in to create employment to build it.

Just pre-design areas of the world, then create them, and analyze feedback to make the transition smooth.

Unlike what we did in Iraq.

There must be a more elegant way to exist as a species with all the resources we have at our disposal and capacity to do both good and not so good.

      I prefer good.

    • I'm getting sick of the world's military pissing away valuable resources. Look how much they(we) have already pissed away and, even worse, destroyed.

With the advances in communication and science, there should be no more need for fear. Has it occurred to anyone we are largely controlling the world in the completely wrong way?

It's like the Dog Whisperer. We need positive actions and positive reward for it, this fear-based behavior is like a curse on reality. If you would design the fucking rules and belief system and strategy all at the same time, on all sides, the whole puzzle could blur the lines and create a system and fit together peacefully.

I want to use the world's aircraft carriers as touring cruiseships of a bygone era used to see the world and rebuild it.

Is the world still competing one government against another or not? Then why do we fear anyone because a war is the stupid goddamn thing that will fix America fast?

But we don't want that. The world can't afford that. So I'd assume the Russians are like some curious neighbor on The Simpsons.

What are the differences in American and Russian culture at this point in time? Christ, are you kids seriously not listening to me when I say knock it off?

We need those resources to design technology to save the world, not destroy it.

      Just use symbolic shoes instead?

Well, it's a free country, I can dream.

      ;)

    • Now heres a wild idea: Tell the Cubans we will lift the embargo if they turn the Russian military complex away? Is it really that hard to come up with that resolution? Let's face it, we aren't being all noble by keeping Cuba in it's box. We've been supporting dictators for years. We are supporting them now. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya....atleast with Cuba we can start supporting a dictatorship that has universal healthcare, 100% literacy, has eliminated the homeless problem.....I mean, not even our dictators....I mean government can say that.

    • this dude is hella suspect. Right now he sees the US is too pre-occupied with the state of the economy and the war in the middle east that he's going to get as close to us as possible, making friends with all of our neighbors, and then using them for his military conquests. on the plus side, at least we have Canada..............right?
