Release demanded for shoe-throwing journalist

Muntadhar al-Zeidi was being held and interrogated by Iraqi security. Arab media, especially the news station where al-Zeidi is employed, has rallied for his release. Al-Jazeera television interviewed Saddam's former chief lawyer Khalil al-Dulaimi, who offered to defend al-Zeidi, calling him a "hero."

Reply doesn't seem to be working correctly.
Joecartoon,
To answer your question, the population was so repressed that they couldn't express themselves at all until the US Marines got there and they were safe and Saddam was in hiding. And you bet, there was alot of shoe mania for several days, they went crazy with it. Here's a small picture.

The insurgents had not started to kill their own population yet. Then again much came from Iran, Syria and Pakistan... So they probably enjoyed killing Iraqi citizens.

Probably as much as the soldiers do. Do you just regurgitate information passed down to you from your Ministry of Truth?
Yes, they are now safe from Saddam. Are they safe from Maliki and the rest of the puppet government? You argue that the citizens of Iraq no longer have to worry about being tortured in Saddam's prisons, no longer have to worry about being repressed. What do you say about the US-run prisons being run in Iraq in which, surprise, Iraqis are being tortured?
It seems as if one evil just got switched out for another.

If you claim capability of extradition of someone for "attempted harm of a us government official" then maybe someone might have the right to press charges.
As it is, we gave these people the right to express themselves. Who the hell are we to say that they cannot express their opinions? He is a HERO. Because HEROES stand UP for their beliefs rather than exemplifying RESPECT for people who deserve it the LEAST.

That guy is being tortured as we speak by secret service agents.
While I don't condone his actions, it wasn't a freakin' bullet. They were a pair of hand me down shoes from payless. If you think that he deserves to rot in jail for that then you are way too butt hurt over this situation.
I would say that current state of our country deserves 20 billion shoes to be launched in Bush's general direction.

I just think it's interesting that he was so exposed in that conference room that somebody had a CHANCE to throw a shoe at him. You would think that the blatant hatred and or malice towards him from the Iraqi people would lead to some slightly better security practices by the Secret Service. How ironic would it have been if a shoe had hit him just right and actually hurt him.

I think this should be a new form of protest.
Next time Bush goes to speak somewhere in America, people should start throwing shoes at him. Hundreds to thousands of shoes flying on stage, pelting him at every botched sentence...
It would help to repair the rift between America and the rest of the world, and let Bush know he's not safe from the Sole Assault anywhere in the world.
At the very least, he deserves that...

Remember "shock and awe?" How would you feel if you lived there and a missile killed your family because you were an Iraqy citizen? Probably the same way this reporter did! He was punished for his actions by getting his ass kicked behind close doors.

If Iran's President was speaking in America and Anderson Cooper threw two shoes at his head from point blank range I believe most Americans would be embarrassed. I also believe Anderson would not be excused for his actions, why would he be? He would face consequences for that type of immature behavior.
There are levels of respect that must be upheld between international leaders and the press that follows them. What gives the press the right to assault the individuals they cover?
It's appalling to read some of these comments that condone this behavior.

as bush himself said following the shoe toss.. it's part of a free society for someone to have the right to seek attention .. now in reality this man was not seeking attention .. he was a courageous man passionately wanting to make a statement.. and in the arab culture the sole of the shoe offered is the ultimate show of disrespect .. of which it's arguable bush is due.. this man made a statement of protest .. and while bush lamely tries to downplay the statement made by this man.. claiming he just wants attention? he also claims.. in a free society.. you have that right.. so why not let him go.. ducking a pair of shoes seems an easy exchange for the thousands of iraqi's killed.. the hundreds of orphans and widows left.. the destruction of infrastructure . in a free society .. this man has the right to show his disrespect it was not an attempt to kill. a bloody nose maybe but .. it was to make his democratic right to show disrespect .. like when bush flips the finger at someone .. or invades and destroys a country

"Showing the sole of one's shoe to someone and throwing them are signs of extreme disrespect in the Arab community."

Damn!!!! If only certain people knew it was that easy, we probably wouldn't have had to deal with Bush for 8 years... Tsk, tsk....

Bush deserves every disrespectful act or protest against him, he is the biggest pile of garbage ever and a real terrorist, no matter what some of the blind masses will say to disprove the fact. I wish this reporter connected with one of his shoes!
