The indigenous Algonquin community of Barriere Lake has been fighting with the provincial government of Quebec and the federal government of Canada for nearly twenty years over their land. Blockades they have set up in the late 1980s stopped illegal logging on their land and led them to sign a Trilateral Agreement with the two governments. Today, the community claims the agreement and all others that followed have not been honored, while logging companies plan to resume operations. In an effort to exert pressure on the government and the logging industry, the community has set up several blockades in protest. In response, the community’s spokespeople and leaders have been arrested. Benjamin Nottoway, Barriere Lake’s customary chief has been arrested at the last blockade and sentenced to two months in jail.

We Norm's gotta stick together...Find out how to make your reservation a "gated community" No one comes in or out without permission, like a sweet little ol' Chicago Suburban Mecca...
You got a logging truck and you wanta come in to do what? I don't think so...
Unless you have a permit--the permit fees are listed below...$900,000.00 per truck per week...

They need to be making reparations to the Native peoples, not trying to continue the insult of a genocide that continues to be swept under the rug ~ esp. in the U.S.A. I am amazed by how minimized the genocide of America's native people is in 'my' country, and it seems that in Canada there is the same problem.

It is about time the federal goverment stops torching these Native communities. Haven't we as a country done enough to these poor people. I am sick and tired of Canada and the United States infringing on and taking away what little rights these citizens have. That is THEIR LAND and they have a right to say what should or should not be done to it. Maybe the new President Obama can help these people. The Black Americian's certainly suffered enough under suprematist rule. And I believe he can identify with the sufferance and help. ENOUGH, let these Native American's live their lives in peace and freedom. WE need to help them not destroy them. A US Citizen

It's not nice to make an agreement and then reneg on it.
Assuming the facts presented here are accurate then the govt. is honor bound to reopen negotiations and abide by their agreements.

I hope all works out for them, and that Canada doesn't repeat the mistakes made by the lower 48 in the distant past.

In a perfect world, or even just a fair world, all indigenous peoples from Manhattan to all of North America would be given back their land that was stolen so long ago. Invading pioneers , settlers and of course the military, would eventually wipe out these proud, spiritual, peaceful and numerous tribes. In the USA it's called Eminent Domain. It was conveniently passed in DC a couple of hundred years ago (don't quote me on the establishment date). To my long time understanding, the simplest way to explain it is like so: What the government wants, in terms of land and lands, rivers, accesses, mountains, Native American homelands of centuries, the government can have under this convenient Law. The USA could not ever come close to making up for the rape of the lands, waterways, plains, mountains, and most important, the Natural Spirits of the Native American.

Why can't the government just settle with natives, and let them preserve their culture(s) and land? The destructive logging companies are pararsites that only want more greed to add to the destruction to the environment, I really hope the Algonquin indigenous will prevail to prove that their culture and land means more than just some land...the government is no different than the logging companies, such destruction and corruption...
