Priest 'ruins Christmas' for kids

Catholic priest has been criticised by parents in a city in northern Italy for telling their children that Father Christmas does not really exist.
Father Dino Bottino, the parish priest of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Novara, let out the secret at a children's mass earlier this month.
A local paper published complaints from dozens of parents. "You've ruined my children's Christmas," said one mother.
But an unrepentant Fr Bottino called it his duty to set the record straight.
"I told the children that Father Christmas was an invention that had nothing to do with the Christian Christmas story," he said.

I used to see Christmas as a farce but now I don't care that Christmas isn't really Christ's birthday or all the other historical truths. I care about the look on my children's faces when we decorated our tree, their joy when opening their presents, and their excitement all through December as they wait for the magic of Christmas Eve. I also care about how adults can set their problems aside for a little while and think of others. Santa is The Spirit Of The Season. MERRY CHRISTMAS :)

How can you say Christmas isn't meant for children? You mean Santa Clause, decorated trees, presents under the tree, Rudoff The Red Nosed Raindeer, Santa in a big red suit, etc. etc. is just for adults? Come on!

I think that is up to the parent to tell the kids about Santa not being real unless the parents think Santa is real, and that right there would be a big mess.

Rather hypocritical for a priest.
Next, someone needs to tell him that God and Jesus are inventions that have nothing to do with reality.
Then he can go home crying to his mother.

If people of other or no faith can get through the holiday season without breaking some kid's heart, why can't he? True believers really give me a hesitant moment sometimes. You know that pause while you try to wrap your brain around something that makes no sense.

He's an educated adult. He knew damn well what effect his attact on Santa would have on those children. He's a jerk.

Well, let's face it. This certainly isn't the worst thing that a priest has done to children.

Wow, usually they don't even talk about Santa in church. It's usually a service that revolves around the Birth of Christ and what happened before, etc.
They light the advent wreath and sing Christmas songs about God.But Father Dino could not have imagined the scorn that would be heaped upon him after he told children at mass that neither Father Christmas - nor the kindly witch called the Befana who provides presents at New Year to Italian children - really exist.
The priest said he had never intended to hurt anyone, but it was his duty to distinguish the reality of Jesus from the story of Father Christmas which was a fable just like Cinderella or Snow White.

Actually, we did talk about Father Christmas, on St. Nicholas' Day which is Dec. 6th. We learned that St. Nick was a kind man who would give gold coins and fruits to the good children in his town...hence the reason for the gold chocolate coins that are so often given as stocking stuffers during Christmas now.
