US police could get "pain beam" weapons

The research arm of the US Department of Justice is working on two portable non-lethal weapons that inflict pain from a distance using beams of laser light or microwaves, with the intention of putting them into the hands of police to subdue suspects.

    • Even a good thing done for the wrong reasons can be a terrible thing. Yay, for a non-lethal alternative weapon... but be wary of it's unintended uses, and very wary of it's intended misuses.

    • I think these types of weapons are totally awesome, and research and science should not be quelled. However, I do have a problem with the way these weapons will most likely be given to police. The handbook I can imagine will go something like this:
      This weapon is NON-LETHAL
      Do not hesitate to use.
Remember this is a peaceful weapon.
Use is preferred over lethal action.

And so the brainwashing in police departments will go. A lot of police officers are a little too aggressive and a little too uncompassionate. These are my experiences. This is the last thing they need, not to mention how aggressively they will be encouraged to use it.

I am not opposed to these weapons, I would however like to see strict guidelines put in place to protect the population, with severe penalties for misuse.
      I think this is reasonable.

    • Studying use of force by LEO's over the past 80 years allows you to pick out a few trends in increasing and decreasing amounts of lethal force use, or crippling force use. One of those trends is when LEO's are given enough tools AND training to use force along a continumn of violence, instead of a black and white "kill or don't" level, you see a signifigant drop off in deaths and serious injuries, both of officers and civilians (guilty or innocent). Thats the facts of the situation.

The other fact is a strong ideal among the chattering class on our side of the fence that have, for any number of reasons, prejudged all use of force as cops bad, civilian innocent. That says so much more about the person making the comment than it does about anything else.

Giving cops more tools AND training to use force, (which is a legitimate fact of enforcing laws on people who do not wish to have them enforced on them) results in an aggregate increase of safety for all us, and an increase of accountability for bad cops. It's not perfect. There are no, and never will be, any utterly non lethal weapons capable of creating compliance. There are no, and never will be, any methods of assuring that all cops everywhere will be hired as decent people, and will remain so. There are abuses. They must be carefully investigated and punished.

But take a trip down any street in any of the "functioning" anarchies in the world and you'll see what life is like with no social control.

Making every cop out to be a bully with a badge makes you part of the problem and an immediate accomplice to not making any solution.

    • yeah.. there is no police state developing in america
all is well.. it's for your own safety .. civil disobedience is dangerous to corporate profit and will not be tolerated .. fall in line or suffer the label of eco-terrorist. all protests must be registered, group size controlled and isolated from media coverage inside the fenced freedom zones
anything else will be labeled riot and subject to harsh criminal penalty and potentially lethal actions.
      obey..it's for your own safety??

    • old news, these have been in existence for a while. when i first heard of them at least 2 years ago they were to be used for crowd control during riots but i guess if you had any metal on your person, i e loose change, keys, zippers, the "pain beam" caused the metal to heat up and cause some serious burns.

i guess the beam just sort of makes you disoriented and gives you a mean headache, thus zapping the riot right out of you.

    • I saw this on future weapons and it looked awesome. What it does is it makes people move by inflicting what feels like a sunburn. That is all.
It is a weapon that is exact, so it can be aimed at a person that is becoming violent, when the others are peaceful. And it won't hurt them.

They never mentioned microwaves when they demonstrated this. But I doubt they want to disclose all the info on the PHaSR- laser tech. I have seen it in test, and yeah it just makes people stop what they are doing and move. No harm. No rubber bullets, No tear gas, and nothing happens to the people that were peacefully gathered.

It's the most humane thing I have ever scene for quelling riots or violence that is out of control.

    • Tayllerand:

The weapon could be used for crowd control and is effective beyond the range of bullets fired by small arms, Karcher said. The effective range of an AK-47 assault rifle is as far as 273 yards, while an M16A2 rifle has a range of 400 meters.

The primary benefit would be protecting U.S. troops, Heal said. The weapon would also limit deaths of noncombatants, he said.

    • Sadly I believe that this venture would prove costly and ineffective. Today's criminals are getting more and more vicious, not to mention less deterred by science fictional weapons; which could likely prove fatal for the officer in question. The two best armaments an officer should have is his or her intuition and side arm. Anything else proves to be a medium by which lives could be at risk.

    • CPr0ffitt:

My home town has been experiencing large quantities of gang violence. An officer is no on trial for using a taser on a man who viciously attacked her when she reported to an incidence of graffiti. I am by no means saying that graffiti is punishable by death, but when attacked and strangled, the officer should have the right to use necessary force. The relevance of a side arm is it lethal. Criminals and vicious people use them against innocent civilians, why should the men and women who are here to protect us be restrained from using the necessary force to protect themselves.

This device merely irritates or "discomforts" perps, in no way will its use deter anyone.

    • This is a really sick idea. The cops are already using Tasers at the drop of a hat. Does anyone really imagine the pain beam will be any different?

    • It won't kill you immediately, but it will give you cancer.

Break the law, and you'll absorb a mountain of medical bills fighting for your life, or you'll die a slow and painful death for being poor and uninsured.

      The future of justice.

    • "dont taze me, bro"

      "dont pain beam me, bro"

the second one just doesn't fit... this is pretty messed up. i like the intention of 'non-lethal' weapons trying to save lives, but this just seems to give trigger happy cops more excuses to show their dominance. not to mention that these things dont seem in any way safe.

    • Shooting microwaves into someones head doesn't sound to healthy.

The name "Active Denial System" doesn't sound to healthy either.
