A lottery ticket that was stolen Christmas Eve from a Leavenworth convenience store turned up two days later when someone tried to cash it in at another store in town, according to a police spokesman.
A suspect was arrested on an unrelated warrant. The case will be referred to a prosecutor for possible charges, according to Maj. Robert Smith, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department. The lottery ticket was one of four taken during a burglary at Hometown Store, 111 N. Broadway. About $200 also was taken.
Smith said the burglary occurred between 11:32 and 11:46 p.m. Wednesday. He said the culprit entered the business after smashing a window. The burglar’s image was captured on surveillance video.
Authorities were contacted at 9:41 a.m. Friday when a woman reportedly was trying to cash in one of the missing tickets at the Snappy Store at 1300 S. Fourth St. Smith said the ticket had been identified as stolen in a lottery computer system.
Police met with the woman, and she identified the man she said had provided her the ticket, according to Smith.
The 48-year-old Leavenworth man was arrested on an unrelated municipal warrant. Detectives received consent to search his residence.
Smith said authorities recovered the remaining lottery tickets. He said police also found clothing that matched the description of what the burglar was seen wearing in the surveillance video from Hometown Store.
