A disabled man was 'left to die by paramedics because he wasn't worth saving'

Can you believe this??

This is the first picture of the disabled man allegedly left to die by paramedics who thought he was not worth saving.

The two ambulancemen who reached Barry Baker and found him unconscious are said to have been caught on tape discussing not bothering to revive him.

When Barry Baker dialled 999 to say he thought he was having a heart attack, ambulance controllers kept him on the phone as they ordered paramedics to use their blue lights get to him as quickly as possible.

But 59-year-old Mr Baker, who was disabled and lived alone, collapsed unconscious while talking on the phone, leaving the line open to the control centre as he lay on the floor.

Minutes later astonished dispatch centre staff heard their crew enter the house, apparently making disparaging comments about the state of the home.

A police source, who asked not to be named, said the ambulancemen were then heard over the phone discussing Mr Baker and allegedly saying 'words to the effect that he was not worth saving'.

    • This happens in hospitals all the time, no surprise really, many times doctors/surgeons/nurses conveniently get stuck doing other things so that when the go to help a patient their would be "nothing they could do".

      Scary shit.

    • This is very unfortunate. The paramedics should be held responsible for their actions and if found to be negligent should not be able to work in medicine again. I agree articspirit, all human life has value. I know people who are not disabled and still live like pigs, but are some of the most intelligent people I have ever met. Obviously these paramedics need a lesson in compassion.

    • I cannot believe the people actually said that his life was not worth saving. That is a disabled person's worst nightmare. So what, his house was a mess, and he was a mess. He is still a human and should be treated as such. All human life has value. All life.

Why do people loose their humanity when it comes to people that are "forgotten" or seen as lesser because they are handicapped? That is wrong in so many ways.

    • I thought EMTs are there to save lives and not so much think about whether the person has minutes or seconds to live..it's all about doing what you can to keep that person alive. This is depressing!

    • First,

I'm certainly not making any excuses for EMS personnel that would act this way and it is truly a terrible tragedy but, most EMS personnel are caring and ethical people. please do not paint all these people with the same brush. As far as anyone knows, this is an isolated incident. One way to know would be to check how many admissions into local ER's there are every day and how many of those are charity care (free to the patient). Many of those patients could be classified as this poor gentlemen was and I believe that a vast majority are receiving medical care at great expense to hospitals.

    • WOW...this is disgusting. I have worked in the EMS field for a number of years and I can say that the way they acted is absolutely unethical and unjustifiable.

In the United States the emergency response system is very closely monitored.. I don't know about in the UK, but here we have very strict protocol and guidelines for what happens. In the state of Georgia, medics are not allowed to announce someone dead nor are we allowed to make the decision as to if the person is "savable". Period. Unless obvious life ending trauma has occurred (decapitation, etc) or the body has obviously started to decompose, all measures are to be taken to try to save the person. We have even had to place the ECG monitor on people who have been dead for days and look like it. Every precaution is taken to make sure things are done properly and there are immediate consequences if they are not done per protocol. What these guys did is disgusting and a rare example of absolute and indisputable neglect.

    • this man should not have been revived. his inferior genetics need to be left to dissapear over the human strain to make room for the superior more advanced human race of the future. destroy bad genes to make room for good ones.

I am not surprised at your user name, "marxist69". You might want to consider that not all disabled people were born that way. Many become disabled due to an accident or mis-adventure. YOU could become disabled someday. It would be fitting.

Even if someone is born disabled it doesn't mean that their genes are any less superior than yours. How do you know that your genes aren't inferior in some way? It's too complicated and too relative a topic to make a judgement call on. Every human being is worth saving. What you are describing is eugenics, and it's been used to justify countless atrocities against humanity, including the Holocaust.

Hi: I am not the one who remarked about hitler. I am the one who mentioned that anyone can become disabled at any time. One minute you're having fun, enjoying life and the next there is a tragic accident and you're paralyzed from the neck down. Just saying, not everyone who is disabled was born that way. Genetics isn't always a factor.
P.S. Since you mentioned darwin, have you ever read "the darwin awards"? Funny, if you have a dark sense of humor.

    • I'm kind of wiry of this....

...I have a dark sense of humor and sarcasm and if I'm with a friend and we walked into a house like that I could say things that were just funny in a dark way but still help.

They either did try to help or they didn't. I didn't read that in the article. They are charged with not helping but that doesn't mean they didn't. That's just what they are charged with.

I got a ticket for having a crack in my windshield because it was bad in the cop's eyes saying something that it wouldn't past inspection....but it has: Twice.

      So charges mean nothing.

If they truly were this vile....they deserve a fitting punishment that would put them in an uncomfortable position and I'm not talking about prison.

    • J_Jammer:

When you work in a high stress job like emergency medicine there are off color jokes that are cracked. That is the only way to leave the situation sane so I agree with you on that, but doing while you should be focused on the patient is wrong.

    • People cannot be trusted cause they like to play God. Just remember that whenever you're in a situation that puts your life in someone elses hands.
