Did she really hit herself or is she taking up for him?
There are a lot of women who will take the blame to keep their signifigant other out of trouble. It happens frequently. They call for help then chicken out when hubby or whomever starts getting all puppy dog eyed and tearful or they start to feel the fear that the person planted in their brains during the abuse cycle.
Either way, the relationship needs to be over. Either behavior is simply not healthy.
