There is a new report out of the Journal Nursing Research that isn’t a groundbreaking study, but one that show people who work in health care are finally recognizing the health risks of cigarettes.
There was a time when doctors and nurses smoked cigarettes at a rate that was greater than the public at large. In fact, if you have ever watched the television show “Madmen,” set in the 1960’s, the writers never miss an opportunity to show a doctor smoking while examining a patient in the office.
By the 70’s and 80’s, the percentage of physicians smoking cigarettes dramatically dropped, but surprisingly, a significant percentage of nurses continued puffing away. This is changing.
According to a UCLA School of Nursing study found that the rate of smoking among nurses has fallen from 33.2% in 1976 to 8.4% in 2003. That is very good news because another key piece of information is the death rate of those who do or did smoke is still double that of nonsmokers.
