Scientists dismiss 'detox myth'

There is no evidence that products widely promoted to help the body "detox" work, scientists warn.

The charitable trust Sense About Science reviewed 15 products, from bottled water to face scrub, and found many detox claims were "meaningless".

Anyone worried about the after-effects of Christmas overindulgence would get the same benefits from eating healthily and getting plenty of sleep, they said.

Advertising regulators said they looked at such issues on a case-by-case basis.

The investigation, done by research members of the Voice of Young Science network, was kicked off by a campaign to unpick "dodgy" science claims - where companies use phrases that sound scientific but do not actually mean anything.

    • Amen brother. I've been trying to get off of methadone for a few months and they keep trying to sell me some detox goodies that do nothing that a good chunk of geritol won't do.
When I was about 19, I'm 49 now i swallowed ant poison attempted suicide and then found out it was loaded with arcenic. Yeah, bad choice, but there is no known product i can swallow that will get the arcenic out of my blood stream except maybe a massive OD of heroin (yeah, permanant detox there) and if you want the garbage out anywhere it's in your blood. Short of a complete blood transfusion you ain't going to "detox" anything.
They love to throw words like detox and recovery and a lot of others..ahh, disfunctional is another and then think the rest of us are dumb if we don't quite get what they're talking about.
I look at it the other way. I know exactly what they're saying, but i think the people who misuse our language like they do their own lives are the dumb ones.
Detox my ass. They're probably the same dupes who also buy that new shit stuff that magically drags an extra 15 foot turd out of your ass for a mere $39.99. I'm not kidding either! They have commercials for this and one web site they had (same bunch) has picture after picture of these long, black and brown nasty, ugly, horrible looking things that all you gotta do is drink this little magic potion and bingo, the old piece of shit that's been hidding up your ass all these years will hop out like a bunny! I have to tell these folks, hard as it is that they really arent full of shit, the commercial is. But, ironically if you buy that product you'll automatically be full of shit, but it ain going to pop out that way. It's in your mind.
Try milk of magnesia and if you don't poop out a ton within a day or two you're not going to keep pushing out the devil a week later with a magic potion.

Well, needless to say, I ain't buyin folks.

    • You can't fill your body with garbage then call the trash collectors to get it out of you after you eat it. Doesn't work that way kiddies and science knows that.
Detox all you want, but it's just like a superfund cleanup site. They have to physically remove all the toxic crap with bulldozers and the human body doesn't mimic geography very well. But, hey. Swallow a bulldozer. i bet that'll end your toxic problem for good.

    • hey, getting people to think the products they buy is more than what they actually are is what advertising is all about...lying. It's not a bar of soap, it's "Caress" fantastically trying on that sexy woman's skin on you, instead of you, you may imagine. It's not a car you want, but the sex appeal it buys for you =P hehehe... I'm a sucker too! =P American through and through, born and raised, consumerism for life baby! =)~

    • I guess the whole "detox" thing comes from eating well, exercising, and drinking lots of water. But it does make sense that "detox" labels on products are not exactly accurate. The same thing happens with food that claims to be "all natural", etc.

    • i'm a firm believer in detox / master cleanse diets. some people go way overboard on them. but done right, it can do wonders. but you shouldn't do a two week detox diet and then go right back to eating fried foods and twinkies. you swill should always eat healthy organic foods and exercise all the time.

I hate to tell you this and it sort of pains me to say it, but..You're not as full of shit as you think you are.
Yes, you're full of shit, but it's the kind that no amount of magic potions and master detox crap is going to cleanse.
A bottle of Milk of Magnesia will do the same thing for you and the sooner you realize this the sooner you can finally claim for all to know, you're no longer full of shit.
      No offense meant.

After making the raw switch the past few months, you mite even not wanna go back! Ani Phyo's book has some excellent recipes I really enjoy the beverage recipes.
Clean could definitely describe the feeling I had after switching. My 1st week of raw I lost 7 pounds. My 1st week of raw I lost 7 pounds.

    • The problem is, instead of actually eating right, people go on these diets and 'detox' regiments under the pretences that they'll 'cleanse the body', or 'get rid of toxins'.

Perhaps we could all get healthier by eating right, and exercising regularly? I don't think a lot of people understand that being healthy isn't a weekend warrior kind of thing. You need to make a commitment to taking care of your body, and eating fast food twice a week isn't going to get you there.

I don't work for them or trying to sell anything just another way to look at this problem of food & health.

Any Corporate leaders reading this should make the decision to be truthful to consumers forget I'm the best screw the rest mentality. It starts with truth in advertising, maybe you should provide a list to publish here?

Hey maybe send The charitable trust Sense About Science to evaluate?
