Rashid Khalidi Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University and the author of The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood on the Israeli invasion of Gaza. What does Israel hope to achieve?

Khalidi was in Palestine in November and early December of last year and says that Hamas and the Palestinian Authority were losing support. Neither was very popular. The Israeli assault will only restore Hamas’s popularity and further weaken the PA. Thus it is unclear what Israel hopes to gain other than victory for Ehud Barak and Tzipi Livni in upcoming elections. Their popularity has surged in the days following the invasion. But long term security?

    • There will be no true victory in the middle east until all the persecutors lay down their stones and forgive. Remember Jesus said "Let ye who is without sin cast the first stone." While all are throwing stones at a weak child defended only by their faith and the will of the Lord. God bless all who read this .

      She is a he and is a small boy still in jr high. he use to have his real pic here on current. he occasionally gets help from his dad/mom on his posts. I do admire his unending support for Israel and his bravery, but since he is young, he has no grip on the dynamics of this whole situation. (it is very complicated) Maybe when he gets some years in back of him, he can understand better..even I have been learning each day..and, after consideration from looking at both sides, I am continually reinforced about why I am against what Israel is doing and has done.
      I'd like to see dataminded at least mature to the point of coming up with real posts that we can debate on...not the hahahaha posts laughing at bloodshed. I am deeply moved even when a child in Israel is injured, and God forbid, killed by Hamas rockets. No one, especially the innocent, should be killed.

      And dataminded, despite what we say, if you got hurt in this war, I know I would be devastated that another innocent victim came out of this. More so since we have been exchanging dialog. I say this with passion and from my heart. We are all human and we are all connected in one way or another. Please find some peace in your heart.

    • Hamas and the other terrorist organizations copied and adapted Hizbullah's warfare doctrine, which is based on exploiting the civilian population as human shields.
      Using civilians as human shields is a war crime, a grave breach of the laws of armed conflict and a crime against humanity.
      Rockets and mortar shells are routinely fired from built-up, densely populated areas and near structures and facilities (including educational institutions and mosques) provided special protection by the Geneva Conventions.
      Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and many other Hamas leaders (such as Nizar Rayyan, killed last week) have openly boasted about their use of human shield tactics.

      Dont believe the hype.. Show me where a Hamas leader said that.. actual clip would be nice.. sounds like an "unnamed source" haha.. anyway.. you know when you teach a child how to get a glass of water from the tap, and the child learns to turn the faucet and wala the child can drink a glass of water.. but as the adult you know there is alot going on other than just turning the faucet that filled that childs glass. Same with the situation at hand. Stop fixating and start solving.. I hate armchair generals..

      Khalidi was spokesman for the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the US and the international community listed the PLO as terrorist organization.

      Khalidi uses rational, peaceful language when addressing English-speaking audiences, yet switches to virulent diatribes when speaking Arabic. In a 2004 interview in Arabic on al-Jazeera television, Khalidi became enraged at the mere mention of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy:

      "By God, I say that the participation of the sons or daughters of the Arabs in the plans and affairs of this institute is a huge error, this Israeli institute in Washington, an institute founded by AIPAC, the Zionist lobby, and that hosts tens of Israelis every year."

      The Middle East Quarterly highlighted the professor's propensity for "bizarre (and anti-Semitic) conspiracies" regarding the war in Iraq.

      Khalidi gets "a $400,000-a-year Title VI [funding from the U.S. State Department and Department of Education] handout from the American taxpayer."

      Khalidi is also a member of the Palestinian American Research Center (PARC), a nonprofit that receives Title VI funding for "Palestinian studies," but too often produces anti-Israel polemics.

      Maybe Israel should stop butchering the Palestinians, stealing their land, destroying their farms, destroying their homes, destroying their secular olive groves, starving them, persecuting them. Israel is the terrorist and the criminal.

    • they hope to achieve the ability to not be randomly blown up. while hamas may have gone away on its own on its own time table that is theory not fact. how long does a country wait before saying we will not be bombed during a cease fire? should isreal instead say well if your gunna oust them anyway we can wait as every day they wait their children are getting bombed?
