    • One should really have a clue about something before attacking someone and suggesting that they should "have their children taken away" from them.

It is perfectly healthy and safe to have a drink or two while breastfeeding. In fact, it is traditionally suggested that a drink can help a Mother to relax while feeding her infant. In Great Britain women used to receive a free bottle of dark beer every day to help support them nutritionally while breastfeeding. The Metro Toronto Zoo gives it's new gorilla moms a bottle of Guinness every day to help support their milk.

The alcohol level in a Mother's breastmilk is the same as that of her blood. This level is always very low. For instance the legal limit for driving is 0.08% blood alcohol. In order to have a blood alcohol level of 0.08% one would have to be relatively intoxicated, say 4 or 5 drinks in less than 5 hrs. But even that intoxicated, I think most people would agree that 0.08% is a pretty low alcohol content for a drink even if that is quite high for a person. If a Mother has drunk fewer drinks, her level would be even lower. Since a "non-alcoholic" beer is 0.5% alcohol, even the breastmilk of a very badly intoxicated mother would basically be considered "non-alcoholic". In fact, the mother would pass out from intoxication before her milk would ever become a problem. Experts in infant nutrition will tell you that the breastmilk of even a very heavily intoxicated mother is still much safer and healthier for an infant than ANY formula.

So, to follow the line of reasoning that suggests this woman should lose custody of her children we would have no choice but to also remove the children of EVERY mother who has ever given her child a bottle of formula. Ridiculous? certainly.

    • So whats the difference if she was in a restaurant having a steak dinner and a glass of wine and breast feeding. WTF is right. At least she is responsible to care for her child no matter where she's at.

the problem is not that she was in public, it's that she was drinking. everything you ingest while nursing ends up in your breast milk. so the alcohol she was drinking would eventually end up being drunk by her child.
