Pelicans mysteriously falling from sky on West coast

Something strange is happening on the West coast of the US. Hundreds of pelicans have been falling from the sky, some crashing into cars and boats, other are found many miles inland. "Rescuers are wondering whether the illness is caused by a virus, or even by contaminants washed into the ocean after recent fires across Southern California. Many of the birds also have swollen feet."

Bird-rescue workers say that dead or disoriented pelicans have been found from southern Oregon to Baja California, Mexico.

From the Seattle Times:

"These birds are on the freeway, getting run over," said Jay Holcomb, executive director of the rescue center in San Pedro. "A bunch we've seen have been hit. They've been landing on yards five miles inland. When some of the people have captured them in parking lots, they just sit in the corner. They just go pick them up."

    • Gadzooks! This is beyond tragic. I suppose it is possible that there is a possible "natural cause" for this, but I seriously doubt it. This smacks of human bungling of the eco-systems.
If we do not start treating our host, Mother Earth, with more repect and love, then we'll eventually be asked to leave one way or another.

    • Strange enough I came across a pelican the other day near a park in the North Texas/Dallas area where I live. Also in the past couple of weeks I've witnessed several flocks of birds flying due west; which is very unusual... especially at this time of year.

    • Maybe this is all a big misunderstanding. This crazy lady called us at the Marine Life Rescue one day complaining of somebody shooting pelicans because she saw them flying headfirst into the ocean. I guess she didn't realize that pelicans actually DIVE INTO THE OCEAN FOR FOOD.

    • We have to stop driving cars, stop eating meat (because the production of it causes more carbon emissions than cars), stop allowing the dumping of toxins...We are in a global emergency. I think we maybe could survive if enough of us react strongly enough, the question is will we?

If we do not demand that the media, the politicians and the government serve the people instead of the corporations, we're dead. Simple as that.

Publicly funded elections, adequate social services, adequate funding for schools, actual science taught in schools, not some religious bull about invented design.

We have 30 years of stalling and inaction to catch up on and our lives depend on it.

Mother Earth would be better without us, she will survive and revive, but we will not.

This is not arm chair environmentalism, its an emergency of epic proportion. The storms will only get bigger and stronger, we have to expect it, and deal. This is not going away. If your place floods, leave because the next one will be worse.

      Agggghhhhh!

    • Wouldn't it be amazing to discover that any other animals had the sentience or ability to contemplate or commit suicide? Would change our understanding of life and consciousness, pretty cool thought experiment.

I do hope they get well, and I do hope car insurance covers birds falling from the sky.

    • Maybe it's "God's" metaphor about what the fuck is wrong with our society...having a bunch of pelicans, which are not unlike storks completely...fly haphazardly into the ground could represent the illegitimate children that are raised by a less-than-humane mentality. Tragic, but a problem nonetheless, just like gravity was a problem for those pelicans after the programming malfunction took down the system.

      Wow that's deep.

Since everything from metaphors to pelicans to humans to viruses to gravity are somehow connected and all part of the same whole, what you said is quite profound and not entirely out of the realm of the possible. Doesn't necessarily mean "God did it to teach us something", but I can't rule it out. Either way, interesting idea even if you said it in jest.

      Good comment!

    • This Story is interesting because in Ventura California. There is a sanctuary for Birds and Wildlife in an estuary Environment that has, or had a large population of Pelicans that just stayed in the area locally. I had heard Years ago that something was making them sick. That Estuary is the mouth of the Santa Clarita River. Above this area the River flows through farmlands and orchards in the Fillmore area. Reaching back up and into Santa Clarita. In the Day, chemicals were used to treat the Orchards and Groves that flourish in the area. It does not sound too difficult to believe that exposure to past toxic materials used, could in some way still be effecting Our Rivers and Estuaries. It's the Birds that react first to toxic pollution.

    • Obama should throw some money at this so scientists can figure out what is going on. It is a tragedy for the pelicans, and an ominous fact for us humans to ponder.
