Its amazing that its obvious how few people actually read the story.

The father didnt sell her, he set up an arranged marriage and the goods and money were her bridewealth.

Whether or not you agree with arranged marriage, the fact is he didnt 'sell' her...he set up an arranged marriage and she willingly went into it.

Granted 14 is WAAAAY too young for anyone to get married regardless of the circumstances (love match or arranged) surrounding the marriage.

    • This looks eerily identical to "Phillip" on episode #69 of "Intervention". "Phillip" was also an alcoholic with a young daughter.. hmmm?

    • "$16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat" does he have no values. I would need $50,000, 150 cases of fresh beer, about 12 pounds of weed (good shit), and a life long burger king card. I can't believe people have such low standards. LOL!

    • Arranged marriages in this day and age are still very much a part of some cultures, however, I think this child is far too young for this type of ordeal.

    • Relax, this is all fine. The 16,000 is going towards her master's degree studies in family counseling. That makes it completely legit.

I know and I agree with that they should follow the law...however Im having trouble finding any credible sources on whether or not arranged marriages are actually illegal in America. Can someone forward something credible that says one way or another?

If someone wants to enter willingly into an arranged or assisted marriage why stop them? Its their choice. I personally dont agree with it, but telling someone they cannot marry in the manner they wish is just as bad as forcing someone into a marriage (hope that makes sense) against their will.

    • weird... OK so did anyone actually read the article? I read the article all the way through and although the bridewealth itself was a bit odd, it seems like this is a normal custom for them and the girl willingly went. True she was a bit young, but many other cultures have arranged marriages with bridewealths. The title of this is misleading as it the article....the dad didn't sell her or participate in human trafficking, he was participating in a social custom and all parties were willing. Arranged marriages are just a part of other cultures, we may not agree with them but that doesnt mean they are necessarily wrong...there are many people who happily fall in love with their arranged partner.

Personally I feel 14 is way to young for marriage, but thats really the only thing I see wrong with this whole issue. That and he shouldve asked for some Tecate too.

i don't think there's anything wrong with arranged marriage as long as both parties are *willing* and not forced in any way. it is a part of many cultures and if that is the way someone chooses to live, then so be it.

however, pertaining to this particular case, this girl is really young, and to say that she was a willing participant doesn't really matter. in my opinion, a 14 year old girl is not able to make those kinds of decisions for herself.

exactly! arranged marriages are fine as long as both partners are willing participants.

Very much in agreement though that 14 is waaaaaay to young....no 14 year old should ever get married either in an arranged marriage or love marriage. That is just way too young to make a decision like that.

    • I wonder if the beer was in a bottle or a can, domestic or imported? Again, is he looking at cases of ground beef, or rib eye steaks?

Ha Ha, I totally agree but you should know that those who choose to hold such idealogies (chopping one balls off because you are morally repulsed) automaticly are fair game for someone else to chop OUR balls off. (well at least yours, my gung fu is imaculate.) So don't be alarmed if someone decides to take your twins as a souvenir based on NO LOGICAL or morally backed clause whatsoever.

qUE? All I am saying is that if you advocate severing body parts then you have no room for complaint if someone severs one of your body parts. Regardless of their reasons, moral or not. But I still agree with you. That non existent prophet called jesus was once quoted as saying: "Live by the sword die by the sword"
