SLIDESHOW: Gaza op, Day 20
A whopping 94% of the public support or strongly support the operation while 92% think it benefits Israel's security, according to the Tel Aviv University survey.
The poll found that 92% of Israeli Jews justify the air force's attacks in Gaza despite the suffering of the civilian population in the Strip and the damage they cause to infrastructure.
Nearly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed during the 19-day old operation, about half of them Hamas terrorists.
Seventy percent of the Israeli public said that the ground operation, which got under way on January 3, was a necessary move, the survey found.
Despite ongoing international calls for an immediate cease-fire and a flurry of diplomatic activity to reach a cease-fire by week's end, the survey found that 90% of Israelis believed that Israel should continue with the operation until all its objectives were achieved.
The survey found that 70% of the public believe the operation had high or moderately high chances of achieving all its objectives, with a whopping 93% approving of the IDF's fighting capability.
About 80% of the Israeli public oppose the cease-fire with Hamas unless it includes the release of IDF soldier Gilad Schalit seized by Hamas in a cross-border raid two and half years ago, the survey found.
The poll also found that the public was much more supportive of the country's military leadership than its political leaders.
A total of 85% of respondents voiced confidence in the IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, compared to 62% for Defense Minister Ehud Barak and President Shimon Peres, and 53% for Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Likud opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert bottomed out the list with a 44% confidence rating.
The survey also found that Israeli Arabs - who make up 20% of Israel's 7 million residents - have the exact opposite views of Israeli Jews about the military assault in Gaza.
A total of 85% of Israeli Arabs oppose the operation, the survey finds, while 80% say Israel should sign a cease-fire agreement even if it does not entail the freeing of Gilad Schalit.
The telephone poll, which was conducted between January 4-6 in the second week of the Gaza assault among 593 respondents, has a margin of error of 4.5 percent...

KUFFAR,
This does not reflect the view of the ITALIAN PEOPLE. iN EUROPE WE ARE DISGUSTED WITH israel AND NO COUNTRY WANTS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE WAR CRIMES OF ISRAEL.
Nothing to be excited about....this is one part-time resident of Jerusalem, who is a backbencher in the Italian parliament and obviously is involved. (SEE.........
Fiamma Nirenstein, a journalist and some-time resident of Jerusalem, is a new Member of the Italian Parliament who is outspoken on Israel's behalf. She writes below that there is increasing understanding of what Israel is facing in its current war. )MAJOR ITALIAN NEWSPAPERS confirm my view that Istrael is in breach of the Geneva Convention, and stands accused of WAR CRIMES in Gaza.
Corriere della Sera (English)
For those who do not read Italian this may be the most helpful newspaper. For this reason it tops our list. Unfortunately Corriere della Sera, which is Italy's most prominent newspaper, no longer furnishes a column in English to the International Herald Tribune published in Italy. However this link will take you to a series of articles , written in English. They are a few days old but better than nothing. A good place to start for up-to-date information about Italy in English. (Daily except Sunday) http://www.corriere.it/englishEasy Milano

Not a newspaper but Italy's premiere wire service, furnishing breaking news and features to publications all over Italy. http://www.ANSA.it/Adn Kronos
Another premiere wire service for Italy. http://www.adnkronos.it/Alto Adige
This newspaper, started on May 24, 1945 in a basement in Bressanone by members of the Resistance, moved to Bolzano and is the leading newspaper in the area. Two pages a day are published in German as this part of northern Italy was once part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Today 55% of the shares are controlled by the group that owns La Repubblica and the weekly L'Espresso. http://www.altoadige.it/L'Arena
One of the oldest newspapers in the area of the three Venices in northeastern Italy, the first issue was published October 12, 1866 just before Italian troops entered Verona, chasing out the Austrians. (It's easy to forget that once part of northern Italy belonged to Austria.) The paper was named after the famous Roman area in Verona and published by the owners of a local printing press. http://www.larena.it/Avvenire
The newspaper was born from a fusion between two Catholic dailies, "L'Italia" from Milan and "L'Avvenire d'Italia" in Bologna. In 1989 a group of bishops and Catholic industrialists joined to create a dialog between the ecclesiastical and business worlds. The paper is published in Milan. http://www.avvenire.it - 3 years ago

Here's another survey by Haaretz that seems more reasonable.
P.S: people who support this war are either: inhumane, or simply too dumb to tell propaganda from facts, or American or Israeli politicians.
if you don't want to look like either please don't use any of the following "Hamas uses civilians as human shields", or "Israel has a right to defend itself", etc.

Someone sent me this :
I was listening to the radio interview of two teens from the south of Israel, both of whom had been living under intolerable conditions for several weeks, caught in the crossfire of the adults.
“Oh my family never watches the foreign TV stations,” said one. “They’re not as accurate as the Israeli news.”
“My father forbids it,” said the other. “It could be demoralizing.” - 3 years ago

Thats impossible. The study has many faults as indicated above. The heading should read:
94% of the world against Israel..why? here's why:
ISRAELS WAR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
Events that led up to it........The cease fire was to help forward the peace process, instead, 18 months before the cease fire Israel decided to tighten down the boarders and not allow much needed water, electricity, food and medical supplies into the Gaza area creating a humanitarian situation right from the get-go, and then when the cease fire took effect a year later, Israel tightened down even more creating a much worse scenario.
In doing so, Israel collectively punished an entire population of a million and a half innocent people, half which are children.
Hamas held out with any answer to this act of war (as noted in the United Nations/Geneva convention, rules of war, etc.."a city/country under siege is an act of war") until late November/early December-5 months into the tighter blockade and cease fire.
Then, under heavy pressure from people in Gaza severely suffering from malnutrition and no water, electricity, very low food supplies, no medication and baby milk, and more...Hamas answered with a few rockets into Israel (that killed no person at all) as self defense and called off the cease fire. And a countries right to self defense against a siege is recognized in all laws and rules of war.
Israel then launched the invasion, preventing anyone from the western world to witness what was going on other than what Israel said. Fortunately, there were already journalists, aid workers, and agencies and the people on the Internet that was able to send in reliable reports.
Such reports have showed and proved the Israeli government has used unnecessary force, illegal use of weapons, including experimental weapons, Israel using children and civilians as Human Shields, Israel targeting journalists, Aid workers and Agencies (like the United Nations), Schools used as civilian shelters (filled with innocent children and people) as well as the direct targeting of civilians, some that were trying to get out of the Israeli Defense Force's way. The sheer use of White Phosphorous Bombs dropped in the middle of a city illustrates the criminal act of indiscriminately targeting civilians ans using an illegal weapon. The effects are long lasting and also contaminates the land besides maiming, disfiguring and killing many innocent people, many of which were children.
The war crimes investigation will certainly prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Israel is in fact, liable for criminal charges, and I pray that the responsible government people of Israel are brought to justice for these Crimes against Humanity.
In closing, I state again, I am not for any violence from any side of the conflict, but it is clear to me and most of the world that Israel planned this well in advance, so far in advance in fact, that the Palestinian and Gaza populations and government had no chance as they worked towards peace in the region and they did sincerely try to work towards peace.

Violence begets violence.
Not to mention, it's simply, impossibly against human (societal) nature to let another nation launch bombs year after year into your backyard without responding. What would we do if Cuba started dropping bombs on Miami? Don't answer that - just wikipedia the Bay of Pigs.
Plus, you are talking about a nation and a people that suffered the most horrific type of genocide imaginable just a little more than a half century ago; standing alone; in a region surrounded by antagonists. (For goodness sake, Hamas doesn't even recognize Israel as a state!)
It's just my opinion as a not-so humble, extremely liberal non-Jewish, non-Arab American, but I think some of you should go easy on Israel and start electing leaders here at home that will make Middle East peace part of the national/global agenda.

They don't have much choice where are they going to go. They are a captive audience, no one wants them as neighbors so where are they going to move to? They are stuck in thier own created hell! They stold the land 60 years ago and have had no peace since. Don't they get it? Give the land back or work out a peace agreement that both side can live with. Hamas will never recognize Israel as a legal state but there must still be a way to work out a truce of some sorts. But then again Israel did steal the land. Its not to complicated when you think about it. Give it back and maybe the Arabs will sell you some of it legally!

I agree with the skeptics in this thread.
94% is insanely high and the margin of error among less than a thousand people is probably really high as well.
Also, don't forget that this is the Jerusalem Post. Polls like this could be an attempt to -enforce- public opinion rather that calculate it.

They shield themselves with civilians because only bloodthirsty people would bomb some place filled with innocent children.
You see, in a way, Hamas has won because they have shown the world what Israel is capable of: burning babies alive, bombing the UN, shooting civilians who flee their homes with white flags.
Perhaps "bloodthirsty" is not the correct term. But what would be more apt, psychopathic?

Israeli Sightseers Flock to Border to Watch Gaza Killings
Picnicking on Hill Overlooking Gaza, Israelis Engage in World's Creepiest Spectator SportPosted January 12, 2009
Parash Hill, a nature reserve in southern Israel, is a great spot for a picnic. With lush green fields and a view all the way to the Mediterranean, it is a serene and picturesque place where residents of Sderot come to quietly enjoy nature. But in a nation obsessed with the glories of its latest military adventure, Parash Hill is now a place for Israelis to gather and watch the death unfold.
They come with binoculars. They bring their families and take pictures. They rationalize away the deaths of hundreds of children by reasoning that “when they grow up they’ll also probably be terrorists.” Its like the fourth of July, only instead of watching fireworks and listening to crappy instrumental music on the radio they watch with barely restrained jubilation as their neighbors are killed under a heavy military bombardment and ground forces continue to pour deeper into the Gaza Strip.
The obsession with watching the violence unfold in the Gaza Strip is creeping-out even some of their fellow Israelis, who have dubbed the site “The Hill of Shame” and watch disapprovingly as others participate in Israel’s newest spectator sport.
