They want an id controlled by the Federal Government. Current ID cards are controlled by the states as they are empowered to issue under their constitutional rights.

Yes, they do want another one issued by the Fed., but I think the current SS card is a Federal card. Obfiously they want more information on it than is on the SS card.
I have mixed feelings about this issue. I can see the need for it because of illegal immigration, and the possibility of illegal terrorists in our coutry, but at the same time, I don't know how we could insure that they would not abuse it. They certainly abused our privacy and AT&T and the other phone companies just went along with it. The one who did not ended up in jail. We are all like the person fooled once and don't want anymore of the last 8 years multiplied.

We already have laws in place that cover all of us. If States do the right job in requiring sufficient proof of citizenship and residency, a state ID is more than sufficient. Virginia has very stringent requirements for Id and drivers license's that are more restrictive than what the Feds required you to provide to work in the US. Maryland does not and hence I know people who work in VA but go to MD to get a license because their paperwork is good enough to get paid but cant pass the requirements to obtain a VA license. Instead of a national ID card they should require the states to adhere to minimum requirements and documentation to provide ID or a License. The Feds should also upgrade the documentation requirements in order to work. I think the biggest failure is the Feds themselves in not having a protocol to ensure that people who enter the US on a visa of any kind leave when their visa is up. In VA if you have a vehicle registered and plated you are required to have insurance. If your insurance expires or is cancelled they immediately inform the State Department in Richmond and they generate a letter requiring you to provide proof of insurance valid for the day after the cancellation. If you cannot provide it you are must pay a fine and are required to carry high risk insurance for three years. the Feds could enforce something similar utilizing the INS database. Anyone issued a visa who does not have one and who the INS date base does show them leaving the country prior to the end date of their visa is tagged for enforcement in the same manner as a criminal

All of us who have a legitimate social security card now have a national ID card already. Why can they not use that card instead of creating a new one?
