Maybe there is a connection between all of this violence among Oriental students at Virginia Tech and crazy beheading guy on greyhound bus in Canada. Maybe it could be linked to the ultra-traditional and super-restrictive lifestyle of China that when these students get over here, they feel just too much freedom and have an outburst that they can't totally control or feel pressure or stress...like Durkheim's study of suicide during the industrial revolution. But as for crazy greyhound guy...I'm not sure what happened there

This type of crime is fuelled not so much by race or nationality, but by social customs and ethics or the lack thereof. In China, it is a personal insult to the family and their dead ancestors for a victim to be beheaded. This guy was either mad at Xin Yang and her family or he was carrying out some type of politically motivated coup.

the spinal cord wouldnt be the problem, you're thinking the spinal column. but anyone trained in basic culinary arts knows how to get a joint free from the body, you cut it between the bones.in fact with a sharp knife dismemberment is not nearly as difficult as one would think. before i get red flagged, i'll just say i was in culinary arts, and humans are not so different from animals.

exactly! I mean I know its hard to say what you would do in that situation...Im sure some were just paralyzed with shock and fear...but still I cant believe no one tried anything. He had a knife, not a gun...use a tray as a shield and throw a ketchup bottle or something! Anything to try and distract the assailant even for a few minutes.

You guys don't even know what happened, or any of the details of the story. How can you judge?

titanost, there were 7 witnesses... they were standing there obviously... WITNESSING. They could have done SOMETHING.

That's not correct. What we know so far is that there were 7 other people in the cafe when the victim and killer were TALKING with each other. That doesn't mean they were around to actually witness the killing. For all we know, the actual murder may have taken place somewhere else in the cafe, out of sight from the others.

Then again, it is possible that all 7 witnesses actually did witness the killing, in which case I would say 2 things. First, how do you know that some sort of intervention would have actually accomplished anything? Its possible she was dead before anyone even realized what was going on. Second, how on earth can you judge somebody in that situation? Have you ever witnessed a murder like that before? Do you think you would be calm enough to make rational decisions in a split-second?

Don't jump to cynical conclusions about others, and quit passing down judgment from your high cloud - or even worse, from behind a computer screen without knowing any of the details of the case.

it should be ok to post a comment that you wonder why one if not all of the 7 witnesses would not react with some attempt to help a women being murdered and beheaded in front of their eyes. even without knowing any details beyond that they were "witnesses" as in they saw what happened. even not knowing details of the situation or how i would react in their place.. my comment was not about bravado or belittling the witnesses lack of intervention.. it was my reaction to the story. i would find it very odd and disturbing if no mention of the witnesses helping the victim would be made in the comment thread of this article.
