President Obama affirmed his support for a woman's "right to choose" on Thursday, the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that led to the legalization of abortion, as thousands of anti-abortion activists descended on the National Mall to challenge his position.

Roe v. Wade "not only protects women's health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters," Obama said in a statement.

The landmark 1973 decision held that a woman's right to abortion was protected by the right to privacy under the Constitution's 14th Amendment, voiding most state laws against abortion at the time.
------------------------------------------------------------

Is abortion still an issue? Or have we reached a consensus that a woman has a right to choose?

    • and in all that talk rather right or wrong nothing has changed abortion has been legal since the 1970's. I just do not understand how people can blame the sitting President for either not doing enough or doing to little.

For those of us who really do not agree with murder in the womb then we must stand up as one voice and change it.

But passing the buck... is not going to cut it just because another law has been passed.
Crying out our politicians everyday by the billions will change things but if you are unwilling to fight for what you believe then just shut up...

    • legalization of abortion is protected by the constitution, however, morally wrong by most of society. Abortion is not in any legal way wrong after the 1st trimester, however, I believe that the govt. should not provide money for a personal, optional, dangerous, mentally strenuous, and pointless surgery. They shouldn't spend tax money on what I would consider on the lines of a cosmetic surgery.

    • We personally believe in responsible choices by looking at all sides.

for us Pro Choice means the right to choose for life or choose abortion in extreme cases as it has been shown fetus come to life early. He should have solutionized to for new wording about teaching of preventive methods with contraceptives instead of just reversing the ban. (so we disagree with him on this)

It should be case by case basis because some country's citizens abort indiscriminately. (tj)

Even though we have a right to choose for our bodies, why should there be a reward for someone who gets pregnant irresponsibably & then choose abortion as a method say during end of 3 months.

President Obama & team should have been looking at all sides & put responsible clauses(to limit those countries & people who may abuse these rights)(nvm)

We understand that because of the ban woman may resort to getting unhealthy abortions & money may needed to provide for safe clinics. But with that should be a solution to make it a lifestyle to be responsible. Some just have the kids & throw away. Some think that abortion is the only birth control when
there are preventative measures which are safer.(se)

Also some churches or vatican put people in a bind with no contraceptives no abortion laws. They just need to see how harmful that is. (bv)

At times names of groups such as pro-life(only life), pro-choice(only abortion) confuse the issue.(tj)
( there r many choices not just abortion or no abortion.) These clinics should provide preventive education to the foreign regions & speak up to places like Vatican to look at all sides & change direction for the good of their people.

*express yr opinion to him regarding this matter at www.whitehouse.org (for he cannot hear only a few voices he should hear more to make a good decision with all the facts & views) have to get into adoption & orphanges later.

    • I've worked in the medical profession for years, there are times when an abortion would save a life over losing both. But on the other hand some girls have used abortion as a form of birth control over and over and..., well you get the picture. stop the insanity, quit screwing around or use 2 forms of birth control.
If you can"t have a child @ this time prevent the pregnancy.
Be responsible! Please for your own sanity. (Having an abortion usually causes women to have alot of regrets later.)

    • "what abortion is--- the destruction of a human life."

That is your belief. It is the same as people believing that the world was created in six days, or that Joseph Smith was presented by an angel with golden tablets that told the word of the Lord, or that the world will end in 2012 as supposedly foretold by an alleged Mayan prophecy. Some people don't believe in any of those things, or in what you believe either.

    • I agree wholeheartedly that abortions should remain legal--though I abhor the thought of taking another human life, if it would negatively affect the health and wellbeing of the mother, then that should become priority. You must take into account things such as ectopic pregnancies and rape. It is as that one question posed to Sarah Palin goes: If the father of a twelve year old girl rapes her and she becomes pregnant, would you think she should get an abortion?
Her answer? "I would counsel her to choose life." Please note that I am using this as an example and am not really bringing Palin herself into this argument,

    • We need to keep abortion safe and legal. Abortions in the third trimester should be generally illegal; except in extreme cases where the mother's life is in danger and there is no viable way to deliver the fetus and keep it alive in the hospital. I am against abortion as a means of birth control. We need to spend more money on counseling and making it easier, by offering incentives to women, to carry their babies to term and offer them up for adoption. But bottom line, just as I said in my first sentence; abortion should remain safe and legal.

    • I have all the sympathy in the world for a woman who finds herself with an unwanted pregnancy. With that said, I feel that it's a shame that they feel they have no other way out than to destroy another human, even their own child. Because, when all's said and done, that's exactly what abortion is--- the destruction of a human life.

Call the baby whatever you wish, a fetus, a gob of tussue, whatever, split all the hairs you want with the old "when does life begin" arguments, the truth is, every single time a woman is pregnant it turns out to be a real baby, a human being. And we all know that, whether we want to admit it or not.

There are other options than abortion for an unwanted pregnancy. Abortion is done because it is the most convenient thing for the mother to do. Nobody knows she is pregnant so she can go on to live her life unhindered by a child. She surely has no compassion or love for her own child if she would rather it be dead than alive.

An unwanted pregnancy is not the end of the world. An unwanted pregnancy might alter a woman's life but it won't end it. Pregnancy is a temporary condition lasting nine months. The death of a child lasts for eternity.

Regardless of the circumstances, whether she can afford a child, whether the child's life would be less than great, no matter what, if the child could answer the question there is no doubt that he would choose to live. But he is without a voice. There are those of us who have been abused, those of us who have had terrible childhoods, yet we choose to live our lives. Even though we might have struggles with our past, we still choose to live. No matter how bad our childhoods, no matter how poor we were, no matter what the struggle was, we still choose to live. It's too bad that the only option a woman can see is abortion-- the easiest way out, instead of life--- a more complicated choice but so much more compassionate and loving for the most defenseless of us.

      its selfish.

they don't take in any other variables.

They is a reason people want abortains. i.e. they cannot support the child, do you want the child to grow up in bad conditions and have long term issues?

They have to concentrate on there career, do you want to ruin the lives of people who actually want to go somewhere in the world?

      its fucking ridiculous.

Obama is the best thing to happen to America in a long time.

    • As much as I agree with Night Diver's remarks, you will not know why the choice for some is abortion until you are in their shoes- thus, leave the judgement for those who make no mistakes...
I heard an interesting question once, directed at the religious zealots mostly, or anyone who voted yes on Prop 8, "if you knew the fetus was homosexual would you still fight for its life?" what a perdicament they'd be in?

    • the abortion issue doesn't always boil down to a religious choice.

but it is for sure a moral choice.

      i'm against abortion.

because i believe you are killing a human being.

this is where the complexities of 'when does a fetus count as a human?' begins.

to me, that organism is a human. it has all the genetic makeup of a human being. if you left it, it would be born, grow up and be a part of the world.

the whole 'give women the right to choose!' doesn't do it for me.

see, the choice was already made.

the women already chose to have sex, and i'm sure they know that's how the baker puts the bun in the oven.

if they didn't take the proper precautions, that was their mistake.

but of course, we as people usually have a tough time accepting responsibility for anything.

that's what abortion is in our time:

      an easy way out.

And what happens when the female is raped? Is it her fault that she is pregnant? She certainly didn't choose to have sex. Although I myself in pro-life, except in cases such as rape and incest, I believe the individual should always have the right to autonomy.

rape is a different story, and one of the greatest moral dilemmas out there.

personally, i can't tell you what i would do in the situation, but i know i wouldn't hold the woman responsible.

my point is that the overwhelming majority of women who get abortions got pregnant after consensual sex.

Most of the time women don’t have this freedom to choose in the first place. In the poorest levels of society women had to have children just because his husband wants sex and he doesn’t like to wear that damn rubber! And she…she’s just a woman, right?

If a woman has a right to choose to have sex, then, she has a right to choose to have an abortion, as well. This is a free country, just in case some people have forgotten that.

Yer one of them thinkers, I can tell. Well, if Dubya didn't get it gall dern done, those right-wing fanatics might just happen to finish that achievement (wait, we have Reason once again). Hey, ya know what, we should ban free-will, that would fix it all...

If you weren't just using a failed attempt at sarcasm I apologize, otherwise--you're a tool.

Another slightly important issue... how could it be murder if we aren't counting the gestation as chronological time? We're born, then counting begins (in the States that is). If we were born and considered to be 9 mo old then I could see some logic(that's much more than simple semantics).

Just kidding, I respect your opinion... but your analogy sucks. Whereas Bush directly signed orders to detain/kill living humans, Obama is simply choosing to not challange an existing law that allow mothers to abort unborn/unformed babies.

    • Yes, abortion is still an issue. No, we have not reached a consensus on abortion. For those who oppose it, it is an irrational cause. They see eliminating it as a moral campaign.

In fact, many anti-choice voters rate it as their single most important factor in voting for a politician. Think about it: they rate abortion as being more important than the economy, health care, the environment, security from terrorist attack and a whole host of other vital national issues.

They want freedom for themselves but for no one else. It is pathetic, it is wrong, and most of all, it is scary. Anti-abortionists have proven they will go to any lengths, including harrassment, coersion, and murder, to keep other free people from practicing what they feel is best for themselves. They are the definition of terrorism.
