Palestinian militants detonated a bomb targeting an Israeli army patrol along the Gaza border, the Israeli military said, in the first violence since a cease-fire went into effect more than a week ago.

      Fuelling The Cycle Of Hate

By Neve Gordon & Yigal Bronner

Israeli soccer matches were suspended during the assault on Gaza. When the games resumed last week, the fans had come up with a new chant: "Why have the schools in Gaza been shut down?" sang the crowd. "Because all the children were gunned down!" came the answer.

Aside from its sheer barbarism, this chant reflects the widespread belief among Israeli Jews that Israel scored an impressive victory in Gaza – a victory measured, not least, by the death toll.

Israeli pilots and tank commanders could not really discriminate between the adults and the children who hid in their homes or huddled in the UNRWA shelters, and yet they chose to press the trigger. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the lethal onslaught left 1,314 Palestinians dead, of which 412 – or nearly one third of all of the casualties – were children.

Muted, not to contradict, only my perspective. I don't believe Israel will allow Iran to be nuclear armed. Israel is a Sovereign Nation. She will protect that at all costs regardless of the U.S. stance against it. They have a History of this type of action and I believe it will be consistent. Only an opinion, no response needed to question why or attack My intelligence. It's an opinion and I'm allowed that whether it is agreed or not. Sorry if it's not politically correct.

    • This is expected when 1300+ people are murdered, 5000+ wounded and an entire city is leveled by the Israeli forces.

It’s hard to control people that have lost their entire family to Israeli aggression. Some have lost their homes and what little they had as well. Now Israel is regulating aid into Gaza while people desperately need help? People do desperate things when they see and know that evil has been done to them.

Also this is the same Israeli military that used Palestinians as human shields, shot white phosphorous throughout Gaza, blew up UN buildings and all infrastructure of Gaza, is allowing little water and electricity into Gaza and is trying to find ways to defend itself against war crimes it has committed.

Really? The attack was a result of 3000 rockets sent from Gaza to Israel in 2008. A continued Anti-Jew hatred and ongoing violence in the Region. Again, how far in history do you want to go?

There was a ceasefire for 6 months and no Hamas rockets were shot into Israeli until Israel attacked Gaza in November. This shows Hamas was more than willing to participate.

Where did you get your 3000 number from? I hope it’s not the Israeli military.........

Wow, you don't even know the Terms:

The word militant refers to any individual or party engaged in aggressive physical or verbal combat, usually for a cause.

Journalists often use militant as a neutral term for soldiers who do not belong to an established government military organization.

      INSTEAD:

A military is an organization authorized by its nation to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society.

Israel has a Military position, Hamas are/have Militants. Understand, or not yet?

    • I am trying to make sense of this situation.
it is difficult .. The festering hate for groups of people on this board are sickening.

I consider Israelis to be part of my close family genetically and culturally, as a Jewish person, so it is natural to listen to that side a little more. I consider children and families to be part of my family as a Human Being. I listen to their pain also.

Hamas as an organization wants Jews dead, Israel gone.. and nothing less..that's what I perceive.

Some of the people with Hamas might do so in the panic of the times. But, if they are fighting under that banner then they must stand up for that responsibility.

I was told by an Israeli on Current that if they want to come into Israel they can do that. Is that correct? They are free to move. They have representation in Parliament.

This is seems different from the Jews in the Ghetto. They were forced into camps without any chance to escape ...like cattle forced into pits..These people are cattle with an open side to their corral...still not a great picture but if the Jews were here they would have left quickly.

Jews were not shooting bombs from their ghettos..they were living peacefully as Polish and German citizens.

The pictures we see are all horrifying yes.

I blame Hammas for forcing the hand of Israel in this. I could not sit without taking action while people are sending bombs into my country TRYING to kill civilians.

I of course do not think Israel government is 100% pure and sweet, nor is anyone. I am not saying that every action Israel takes is great. They I am sure make big mistakes in policy...there will be full disclosure into all the actions of war.

All actions should of course be investigated fully.

Just a question for you, something you'll just overlook and take for granted that you are where you are; what if you were a Gaza citizen minding your own business. All of the sudden Israel shuts off your water, electricity, and basic aid to your homeland. Not only that, but you've been living in a cage-like environment with a 25 high wall around your whole neighborhood and the most difficult check-point system to cross in the entire planet. And to add on to that, just because your government fired rockets in retaliation of your horrible state of living, your cities infrastructure and schools got bombed the living shit out of them. To make things worse, Israel has been shooting phosphorous gas for no apparent reason other than to burn your children alive. What would you do? Accept things because that's how they are, or get angry? You're lucky enough to be born where you were, and to be doing what you are now. Don't take it for granted, because as soon as you do, you'll be facing a life or death situation that's out of your control, and then you'll see what it's like.

Oh and not to mention, while you're living in a piece of shit environment (still playing on to the prior question, of "what if"), how you would feel especially if the people that are bombing your lands and turning into hell, are living in the richest and safest part of the whole Middle East region (except the ridiculously rich UAE)? And to know that they are bombing what little your nation is built upon. Just put yourself into their shoes for one night. Look at the pictures and think it over. We're all humans. 400 something children didn't need to die within a few weeks because of the childish ways of the Israeli government and Hamas.

What do you expect me to say? Convert these Muslims to Christianity and then you will see how they won't kill each other?
If I remember correctly, they were not trapped 200 years ago, or 50 years ago or until 4-5 years ago.

Your comments does not show the reality and the History of the Gaza people. They want the Jews dead, nothing less. Even if the Jews move away, then they will want to move into Israel at some point because at some point of the Quran, Mohammad ate dinner there and then it's a holly place and should be their.

They will never stop, so the current situation is a consequence of their past, present and a known future.

That is the whole point. the UAE should be held accountable for everything, NOT Israel! The UAE is their "blood" their "brothers" and the heart of their religion. They should be educating them, helping them understand and tolerance, and not "let's kill each other". After all, when these attacks go off, Oil goes up and the UAE gets richer, Right?

Look, now the cease fire is gone! Israel did everything they Promised. Simply, Hamas is not trustful.

petarro you are obviously uninformed. none of us here are pro hamas. we are simply anti genocide. the horrific violence on both sides of this debacle is being perpetrated by the sick 1% and their brainless minions, as it is in the rest of the world. to say that muslims in general are violent psychotics is an ignorant, blind point of view that has no basis in reality. did you know that the KKK considers themselves a "christian" organization?

do you beleive EVERYTHING you read? i'm sure isreal could cook up a thousand more headlines to damn everyone in gaza, and i'm sure they will, as long as they can, so they can exterminate the last bit of resistance to their pogrom. isreal has come full circle, from the persecuted, to the opressor, god help them, and they will eventually be judged, by man or perhaps by their own God. this "conflict" is so lopsided that it might as well be the US Cavalry vs the Native Americans.

Let me ask you this. if Jesus Christ were to show up today, who would he ask you to kill? would he ask you to kill in the name of revenge? please tell me who Jesus Christ would issue a fatwah against.

OMG you people are a flipping joke. Lay down and die, please save the drama for Bravo. Palestine is where it is today because the people make no effort to change. If you do what you did, you will get what you have always received. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over while expecting different outcomes. So if you are starving and angry you attack the people who have the power to keep you starving? Israel agreed to allow aid, food back into Gaza and the people respond by attacking the Israelis less than a week after the cease fire. If Palestinians truly want peace and a chance to prosper they need to throw out Hamas and elect a civilized, educated government that will actually work to make their lives better.

    • The explosion killed one Israeli soldier and wounded at least three others during clashes along the Gaza-Israel border today. The Israeli military confirmed only that an attack on a military patrol had taken place. This is the first reported breach of the fragile ceasefire put into place between Israel and Hamas on 18 January.
