A million on strike as France feels pinch

Image

More than one million French workers downed tools yesterday in the first general strike to hit a major industrialised nation since the start of the global financial crisis.

Public and private sector workers took to the streets across France to protest against President Nicolas Sarkozy's handling of the economic crisis, saying too much had been done to bail out fat cats and banks and not enough to protect jobs and help workers make ends meet.

    • The land of the sleep walkers...odd...the French have to show us the power we all have.
Is anyone else sick of the bail outs for the rich and wealthy while we scramble just to pay bills and buy food?

    • Hello, I agree that Bush and his gang of thieves just robbed America and its people blind, but I would never put Bush in the same league as Mr O. They are two entirely different kinf of people. One is a KILLER and GREEDY and a CROOK, the other at least is not a KILLER or does he seem GREEEDY and he does not appear to be a CROOK. It seems he is holding people responsible for thier actions, something that was not done when the VILLAGE IDIOT was running the BLACKHOUSE. It seems like it is the WHITEHOUSE again.

I usually don't get involved in dumb arguments but I gotta defend some aspect of my heritage.

Ok my friend quick history lesson:

      No france = No america
or did you forget who benjamin franklin was begging for military support during the revolutionary war?

Yes the US came in ww2, but so did england, and russia. While everyone fought to death, truth be told the russians did most of the hard work.

I'm not gonna slander you but I am warning you, ignoring history is a game for fools...

Every country entered the war because they were attacked. Russia did all the hard work? They could've done more had they not killed their own soldiers...

And I don't understand how your WWII reference is defending the French...they surrendered to the Germans in a week!

    • This is how democracy looks like!

That’s why France is what we all know, because this happens all the time, if people don’t like one thing, they say it out like... or make voodoo puppets of their president.

    • Giving money to companies (instead of the people) doesn't do jack shit.

We gave money (billions!) to our banks and said, "Okay! You're going to start loaning it out now, right?"

After they finished laughing their asses off they said, "Um...no. We're going to keep it. But thanks!"

And CEO's do the same damn thing. So their profits are LOW because NO ONE IS BUYING ANYTHING.

So if we give Company X $1billion dollars...why in God's name would he hire 10,000 more salesmen when NO ONE IS BUYING ANYTHING? He wouldn't. And as we have seen...they don't. And why would you increase production (and hire more people) when sales are low?

"Hey! We shipping 10,000 FEWER units of widgets this month than last month! Let's hire 200 more people to increase production!"

Sounds idiotic, right? Yet Both Bush and Obama seem to think just handing over cash to corporations will encourage them to expand (???) while their profits and sales are shrinking.

This has all been proven by Bush. He gave so much cash away, gave sooooo many tax breaks....and not a single job was created. They took the money, said thanks, and then went to go play a few rounds of golf before taking their boats out for a spin. Lovely sailing weather this time of year, ya know.

At least the French no they are being ripped off and that their President is making a huge mistake by handing all the cash over to the fat cats as opposed to the people (who will actually spend it)

    • I would protest. Too bad American citizens rely too much on the government for change instead of demanding it. You know... it is OUR government too.

    • Some people know what to do when they get pissed off. Same situation here that the government spent all the money on the corporations that act like they dont even need it.

    • These people are pretty smart and realize they are being taken to the cleaners by the Government big wigs and the corporations no different than Americans who are handing billions of dollars to the people responsible for the bad situation in America. The Bankers and Bush caused the problem with thier greed and thivery and what does America do, it gibes them 350 billiom more dollars as a reward for screwing America and its common people. American's should be up in arms as we become more educated with the use of computers you would think people would learn how to protest when they have been F_____ as bad as the average is being F_____!

    • WOW. Quite uneducated people. How do you protect Jobs?
      - Giving money to the Employers to keep employees.
      - Cutting taxes to Employers to use the cash in other processes.
      - Giving money to emerging markets to generate jobs.

What do the French want? Free bread and wine or 5000EUR per person?

    • Almost look like a general strike wonder whether the president will resign? France is not a big country but they take there Democracy serious many heads roiled in the revolution, changing the outlook of the working class people in Europe. Feudalism is a form of Capitalism and Materialism were regular people have no say in there personal freedom. Opportunities to own things are very limited.
USA is a capitalistic very materialistic oriented country but competition is a balance check for Capitalism, But if there is no financial support for competing than USA turns to a kind of Feudalism supported by big Companies controlling the working class people.
Revolution by force would be one way to stop capitalistic Feudalism. The other way would be by governmental control of the Capitalists. But most poletitions are bought by Capitalists and their lobbyists to renders any control ineffective.

You are making the assupmtion that all Americans have access to the same level of education. (Access to the job market is another story all together.) It would seem so on the surface. But, the student loan system is tragically flawwed. It shackles the middle class kids who can't pay for college with unreasonable debt, right out of school. If there were more merit based grants and scholarship, then maybe, the playing field would be more level.

    • It's great that the French are willing to protest but in my opinion it's more because they're restless and violent than because they care about their rights.

Not saying they don't have a right do what they're doing, just making an observation. They tend to react quite disproportionately.

i like your "kinda kinda". weirdly, it made me think.

no, it's not like a strike because a strike is voluntary while unemployment is involuntary.

yes, it is like a strike because the government makes strong actions to alleviate social problems when the unemployment rate reaches a certain level.

      kinda kinda is absolutely correct.

    • get over it. their president blows and doesn't know crap about the economy.. it only makes him 1 of many. is a strike going to make his understanding of the economy get any better... highly doubtful.

    • Look at the froggies go! I didn't know they had it in them. It's good to see somebody is pissed-off enough to take a day off. For people who are stuggling, a day without pay is a major sacrifice. So, when our auto workers follow the Frenchies lead, will we call it a "Freedom" strike or will they get credit for the idea?

I agree man. Taking a cut in pay when you're already struggling is a major decision and sacrifice. I wish more people would follow their lead. And of course they had it in them. striking is like the national sport of France. :P There's always a "Grève"

I think that it is great that they are showing their discontentment. HOWEVER, after having lived it France for a significant amount of time, I have seen that the French go on strike very often, nearly everyone does it -- Universities, The Train System, even television stations! Not saying that there is anything wrong with that, I think that it is a good way to get attention, but this is nothing new!
