Republicans should embrace marijuana law reform

The general partisan positions concerning marijuana law is: Liberals in favor of decriminalizing/legalizing marijuana, while Conservatives have been against changing the current drug laws and continuing the costly war on drugs. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has recently voiced her support of marijuana law reform, but said that there is work that needs to be done outside of Congress before such action can be taken. Other Democrats have also voiced their support of reform.

    • I am 100% behind the legalization of marijuana. For one thing, it would send a very loud message to the country and the world that the US is serious about getting rid of antiquated laws that were put in place for the basest of political agendas to begin with. For another, it would -- or could -- immediately spark a tremendous boom in agriculture, and could be tied to green farming methods. It would also take a huge group of so-called 'criminals' off the books.

That having been said, what are the drawbacks to legalization? I see problems with controlling exports (since the rest of the modern world would not follow suit). I also see potentially serious problems controlling under-age access to pot - meaning, it would be far more problematic than it already is to protect our children from it. Another problem would be its impact on the diplomatic community. Finally, there are so many people in this country - politics aside - who are very strongly opposed to legalization that it might cause some additional social unrest at a time when our country simply does not need any additional stressors.

But some day, my friends, some day.... I mean, I actually can't smoke it (makes me sick), but I don't have a problem with any adult who does.

    • Yes they should. MJ is a seed. It's a plan!! Our government screws us over when it comes to DRUG policy. I can't count the number of times I've been watching TV and seen the ad for "Requip". Requip is a drug approved by the FDA for restless leg syndrome. What gets me is when they list the side effects. Requip can have a side effect where you could feel a real intense urge to have sex or GAMBLE! wtf

Its simple if you have an R by your name on c-span you are a republican.
Saying "Individuals pandering to potential voters do not represent what the party is about" is pure semantics.

It's not even close to semantics. I'm not arguing the use of terms.

I'm merely stating the Republican party is about Fiscal Conservatism.

I never said I agree with them.

It is true, the republicans have consistently declared that their real mission is to reduce the size of government, be fiscally responsible, fiscally conservative.

However, since Eisenhower (who put in one of the most massive public works projects ever: the Interstate Highways), the leadership, policies and legislation from Republicans has had exactly the opposite effect. (Hey R.R., thanks for all the homeless! Emptying all the mental institutions onto the street was great judgement.)

They quack like a duck, but waddle like a worm.

Is the same true about their moral positions?
