Ethical Debate: 14 Kids Too Many?

Kaiser Permanente's Bellflower Medical Center reports that all is well with the mother and children. Seven babies are breathing unassisted, and one is receiving assisted oxygen through a tube in the nose. Seven are being tube-fed donated breast milk.
It is unclear how this woman ended up with eight embryos in the first place. "If she went to a fertility clinic, there's wide consensus from every single ethicist and fertility specialist that this was irresponsible and unethical to implant that many embryos," said M. Sara Rosenthal, bioethicist at the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine. "This is an outrageous situation that should not happen."
Doctors say that giving birth to extreme multiples comes with tremendous risks for both the mother and the babies. Risks for the children include bleeding in the brain, intestinal problems, developmental delays and lifelong learning disabilities.
__________________________________________________________
In addition to the ethical argument on how the young mother received so many embryos, both CBS and Fox news have reported that the 33yr old woman is unmarried and lives with her parents.
So what do you think? Is the mother going to be able to adequately care for 14 children?

I think this is a little bit NUTS!! How can a DISABLED women who has no job, no husband, and 14 childern take care of all of them. I mean ok she has a supposed nanny but happen when there is no moeny left to pay that. What were the doctors thinking..?? She has a bad back, its proven that you are not supposed to give more than two embroys to a women under the age of 35 and regardless why would you give her 6..? If she has the disablity from that riot (back injuries) and she really wanted just wanted one more child why would she consider adoption.? This is absoluty ridcilous. Now you have a babies in the hospital and possibly going to have disablities them sleves. I don't think she can raise all 14 children i think she is an idot and very selfish. She already has 6 its not fair to them.

And who do you think will be supporting these 14 children?? TAX PAYERS ANYONE!!!???
Not to mention the selfishness in having this many children..... No attention, lots of medical bills.....
and a lot of diapers contributing to our allready compromised enviornment...
Not very responsible if you ask me....
Now she should have her tubes tied......since she thinks she is a baby making machine.....(should have done that after the first 6) - 3 years ago

The first problem is with the fertility doctor allowing her to have six children the first time. The second set of births is completely out of control. I would argue there has to much more self/government regulation of the fertility industry. I don't know how the procedure works but it seems like there are more multiple baby births lately.
Anyone with first hand experience of the fertility procedures?

Well I have one son, he is 19 I do not look at him as an example of me exercising a "right" to have had him.
There is nothing in the Constitution that says we have the 'right' to have 1 or more children especially: if we are UNABLE to care for, feed them, bring them up to be productive citizen, as well as caring, compassionate members of this society we all are in!
So in regarding this "right" well I chose to excercise it only once, and I do not regret it.
My son is a treasure, and I am priviledged to be his mom.
His dad, I wonder if he feels the same? who knows. But I don't feel I had a need to have more, that is for certain. He is a wonderful person, and perhaps he would have been cheated if there were siblings, for my time I gave to him, raising him.
thank you. have a great day.

Technically speaking it's her right, but it is unethical.
Even if she DID have the means by which to take care of this many kids. That's too damn many and there's no way she could adequately raise them all. Shit, she probably couldn't even remember all of their names,

We can all do what we want, should do what we want. BUT
BUTBUT
we should all think more about WHAT we want before we act.
Consequences and impacts.Personally, I think someone would have to be either ignorant, sheltered, callous and/or selfish to have that many kids. Absolutely horrible.

I am afraid this woman will be rewarded for her irresponsible and ill conceived actions. She should be punished, not rewarded. She has used the miracle of modern medicine and technology to mock the sacred bond of parenthood. By taking 8 fetuses to term when she already has 6 children at home is simply premeditated child neglect and/or abuse.
Psychiatric evaluation and possible removal of the children may be in order.

14 kids is wrong, fertility treatment after 6 is wrong. I am speaking ethically and morally wrong. Wrong for the planet, wrong for our burdened infrastructure, wrong for our pockets. She can do whatever she wants with her body. But she hasn't got a brain, common sense or respect for human rights - everybody else's.

What the hell is this women doing trying to have more kids when she already has six?!! That is absurd!
Shes 33 and lives at home? Its clear she cant properly take care of the first six and the new eight is definitely not gonna have a very high quality of life. There should be a law against this kind of behavior. Who's gonna pay for it? Me and you. The world is overpopulated. We don't need irresponsible people doing this kind of stuff. - 3 years ago

It is morally deficient of her to have more children then she can financially support. She is a parasite living off of her parents whom she bankrupted and by syphoning educational grants from people who actually intend to utilize their education. This link takes you to story reporting her agents attempts to contract good morning America and Oprah and negotiate deal for $2 million and launch a career as a tv child expert.

This is depressing. What doctor gave this clearly troubled woman fertility drugs? I"ll bet any amount of money the treatments were paid for by the state of California, seeing as the woman lives with her parents and has no job. And Californians wonder why their state is broke. Congratulations, you'll now be paying to raise this woman's children.

She should give them away like puppies.
Seriously, I'm starting to get concerned that too many fat morons are doling out kids like gumball machines while fit, intelligent people are choosing careers and recreation over having children. If we're not careful, Americans will de-evolve themselves into a nation of simpering, blob-like idiots, ala the people on the Axiom in the film Wall-E.
When you think about, it's your responsibility as a healthy smart person to have a kid or two, just to keep up with the virtual army of retards being pumped out by our nation's white trash.
That said, there's no way I'm having a kid any time soon. I mean, c'mon, they're such a pain.

BTW-maybe if christians weren't constantly interfering with the instruction of safe sex and womens' right to abort unwanted pregnancies, we would be in a better position???HMMMM???? your right. psh. your narcissism.

If this person (whom thinks she is the candidate for self proclaimed "Mother of the Year" award), gets all the stuff she believes she "is entitled to" , since she had her first child irresponsibly, just picture the scenario:
FREE ? House, boatloads of diapers, toys, goodies, possible appearance on Extreme House makeover, money to pay for fertility payments, food, car? strollers, etc ...
Then multiply this: xxxxxx times with this "New American Union" in play, and will further ruin the economy of the states, especially border states!
We already have hundreds of thousands of legitimate citizens in tent cities, whom are not able to live in their former homes, due to unethical financial practices, by bankers.
And this is the latest feeding frenzy idea to begin, on the heels of a tragedy. It's sad. We citizens whom pick up the tab here better wake up! And start to complain, demand accountability. - 3 years ago

The government should help because she didn't mean to have the 8kids at once. By the way educting and helping these kids is building the nation. This story sounds similiar to this one in a little in Cameroon-Africa. Open http://votesizing.org/en/story/Causes-and-Consequences-of-Early-Marriage

two words. fertility drugs. she did mean to have this many kids, her own mother is speaking out about how obsessed she is with having babies. yes the government should step in, and start tying tubes. Im talking mandatory. People keep bitching and moaning about the economy, but keep makin it worse by popping out more and more kids. The root of all the worlds problems stem from overpopulation (which, interestingly enough, can be mostly blamed on christianity-a popular topic today)

"33yr old woman is unmarried and lives with her parents."
six kids is more than enough.
i agree with pihro338, passed two kids you should adopt. there are too many kids bouncing around the foster care system who need homes, family, and stability. if she needed a seventh child so bad she could have found one in a foster home.

if you think about it, more than 2 kids is too many. If a couple has more than 2, theyre causing the human population to grow, which is already bursting at the seams. yes, its wrong. People should be adopting, especially here in the states where we are more than capable of doing so. But no, people are selfish, they want little versions of themselves running around, they dont care about other people. Same goes for dog breeders. Its fucking wrong. I dont give a fuck if you want a labrodoodle, adopt one of the millions of homeless dogs that are put down every day because no one wants them. people make me sick.

theres going to come a time where we have to put a limit on how many kids people can have. Call it fascist, call it whatever, but there are too many people on the planet already, we cant sustain this many. What about all the other life that has already suffered? Laws will be put in place and its due to our own irresponsibility, it will happen, make no mistake about it. Wah wah wah its our right-bs. it was our right before it started imposing on the rights of all other life on this planet.

Human can be pollution too, so give it a better future for your children and to the earth, ear a damn condom!

Who are any of you to judge her? Since when is anybody fit to judge how many children a woman adequately care for? There are many women who run orphanages with their husbands of 40 plus kids and the children grow up very loved and cared for, more than some single child households in America, where the kid grows up in daycare and with nannies, very little parental involvement. Maybe she is crazy and shouldn't have that many children, but nobody is allowed to put a cap like that on anybody... it's a free country.

While I agree with the principle of what your saying in this case there is a cap. Think of this. You should be spending so much time a day with each one of those kids and there are only 24 hours in a day. So do you really think each of those kids gets the attention they deserve?
Even if she stays home and does nothing but play/teach her kids she's not even getting 2 hours with each one. Throw into the mix that she is either working or cooking/cleaning/etc at home so they get even less time than that.
Then again there are nannies, day care, etc but honestly, none of those are a replacement for their mothers time and attention.

i think this is an interesting debate, because i believe that a woman has a right to do as she pleases with her body but i seriously question that she will be able to adequately provide (financially, emotionally, affectionately, etc) for this many young children on her own.
where do you draw the line between the woman's rights and the children's rights?

Having as many children as possible when your struggling to care for six should not be a "right". There's the right to have children and then there's this kind of complete irresponsibility that is so obviously wrong it goes way past the "woman's right to choose" debate.

In almost every case the answer is a resounding yes. I personally feel that while fertility clinics/drugs do help many people have children when they previously couldn't this field is doing more to damage peoples lives with overcompensation and too little regulation.
