Media's war on marijuana continues: Phelps admits 'regrettable' behaviour

Image
jkw077
Decisions are made by media executives that result in far more reports of people in trouble because of marijuana than reports of the far more plentiful evidence that marijuana, in a managed and respected atmosphere, would greatly benefit society, economically and medically.

The Revolution will NOT BE TELEVISED!!! (or streamed online if the FCC or ISPs have anything to do with it)

    • It's the Tim Tebow factor: they want "the golden boy" to come to life, so when something tarnishes it, they cant reshine it, or dont want to.

Maybe it is just a generation gap thing, where the 40+ year olds say DEAL, while the 20 year olds say NO DEAL.

Hell, that makes him more like me than this larger than life figure the media wants him to be.

So what if he loses sponsors, he has plenty of time to make that back and then some; Kobe did.

    • I don't know why anyone is disappointed in him. He does his job when it calls, but he is human like all of us. He likes to have fun like everyone else. It is just that he is in the public eye so that gives everyone the idea that they can judge him. You think that if we were celebrity, our dirty laundry wouldn't be air'd??? Betcha have some...huh?!

    • So a record-setting, gold medal winning, champion Olympic swimmer decides to smoke some weed and now he's an idiot, a dope, and stupid. He's going to lose his endorsements because of it, not because he's no longer a talented swimmer but because he was photographed with a bong to his lips.

Is this Michael Phelps problem with "illegal substance use", or society's problem with marijuana?

    • It's time for real discussion about cannabis/hemp. Enough is enough. It's time for the lies and half truths to be addressed. Too many people are truly uninformed about the plant. It's no wonder. Facts were removed from text books. Why? Cannabis/hemp is a natural competitor to many synthetics on the market today. People are not afraid to discuss the issue because it's such a demon weed. They don't want people to know the truth. We have been lied to for years and facts stated today, would prove the lies of yesterday.

    • Fuck this! He smoked the evil marijuana drugs the American government warned me about...
TAKE AWAY HIS MEDALS AND THROW HIM IN JAIL FOREVER!!!

Lazy pothead... How dare he win 8 Olympic Gold medals and then think it's okay smoke weed... What will the children think when they stop staring at internet pr0n long enough to see that pic of him with a bong in his mouth?

He should be punished. He is supposed to be setting an example for our young children as a role model, and he blew it. He inhaled and blew his chance like that bong rip. Take away his medals, his endorsements, and throw him in jail. Teach our children this is what happens when you smoke marijuana: some a-hole comes along and throws your lazy ass in jail.

He's not sorry, no, not yet. He'll be sorry when he can't afford his fix anymore because marijuana has taken away his ability to swim, or move off the couch for a munchies attack. He'll be sorry when there's no more endorsements because of his brain damage. He'll be sorry when the US swim team kicks him off for being a lazy pothead.

Yep, this is the end for lazy druggie dopehead hippie Michael Phelps. Have another bong hit, I hope you choke on it you hypocrite. I hope you OD on this harmless illegal substance, Phelps. Now if you excuse me, I have to go snort an 8-ball and shoot up 4 grams of crack in my arm.

      P.S.- Sarcasm FTW.

    • HA yet another way the media tries to make marijuana seem unnacceptable, obviously it hasnt affected him, seeing as how he has 5 gold medals..and was in the olympics. people should stop making such a big deal about this...,and all you hardcore conservatives can stick to your narrow minded opinions[oh please do] but get some real backed up facts about marijuana and stop making it your goal to make recreational pot smokers look evil and seem like people who contribute nothing to society.

    • My God, if anything this should now be incontrovertible proof that smoking marijuana doesn't effect your health in ways alcohol, cocaine, meth, etc.. can, this is the Olympic Champion we're talking about here, Mr. Establishment, open your eyes and SEE what's in front of you. Hypocrites will always deny the parts of the truth that aren't convenient to their designs.

    • I'll bring up a point that seems to be getting overlooked here.

Michael Phelps is yet another victim of our War on Drugs. There's nothing wrong with what the man did. He's worked his whole life for his goals and succeeded better than any before him. He deserves every kudo & dollar given to him.

But now that's reduced as is his image to a lot of folks, and the only REAL reason for it is he went against public conception. Yet another victim of what lots of people think but can't defend and refuse to talk about, encouraged by the big "PROHIBITED" to bolster their feeling of being right.

Realistically Michael got off easy. Some of us go to prison. And had the cops shown up the stink would have been worse. The thing is, there's no reason for any of it. It's a waste. Unfortunately, it's now Michael's waste too.

Rather than judging this young adult that's still testing out his wings, we should be addressing the travesty of this prohibition that's created the whole thing. Who's Next?

    • Although I don't believe he should have aplogized, It's good that he did. He would have lost many sponsors and he creditably as an role model for anyone would have probably been diminished.

Even though lately I've noticed alot of marijuana use of celebrities in the news you read online or possibly hear on the television news.

Also, its kinda funny how stories about pot get so many comments on current. (Yep, I know, I'm on here to.)

    • I am more disappointed by his dui or even his strip club outing than this. Drugs are obviously an unhealthy thing to do, no matter how blatant the effects are, no matter if it's a solitary thing, but I find his reputation more tarnished by things that perpetuate the degradation of women or risky behavior that challenges the safety of others. Now, if he drove after that picture was taken, I'd more understand the upheaval.

Give me a break. The guy only smoked pot, he didn't go on a killing spree. People's priorities and what they get upset about is all fucked up. If he wants to smoke, that's his deal. No one else.

    • I don't get it? So, he smoked a bit o' weed, what's the big deal? Marijuana should be legal anyway, the government shouldn't be able to tell us how to live our lives. It harms your body, so not using it would be common sense. Governments should not restrict ones use of his/her "common sense".

    • “He didn’t know many people so you’d think he’d be a little shy. But he was loud, obnoxious and slamming beers from the get-go.

“Every girl wanted a piece of him and every guy wanted to be his best buddy. He couldn’t get enough of all the attention.”

As he basked in his hero status, Phelps knocked back beers and shots of spirits. And when a student offered him the glass bong engraved with red writing, he did not hesitate, says our source.

The 6ft 4ins athlete, in a white T-shirt and navy cap worn back to front, clasped the device in his huge hands and inhaled deeply.

Our source said: “You could tell Michael had smoked before. He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do.

“He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits. Michael ended up getting a little paranoid, though, because before too long he looked like he was nervous and ran out of the place.”

But the next night, Phelps was out partying again. The source added: “He was right back at it at Pavlov’s bar.

“Like the night before he was holding court, throwing back shots two at a time and pouring drinks to every cute girl.”

Drink has got Phelps into trouble before. In 2004, aged 19, he got 18 months probation for driving while under the influence.

His wild behaviour is in stark contrast to the grim regime which took him to the top of his sport.

He once described his life, saying: “All you do is eat, sleep, swim; eat, sleep, swim; eat, sleep, swim.”

It's hard to believe all of these details about a 24 year old due are available. To me it proves that our age of information is making it a little easy for the coniving to go about their business. Glad it's not me. That could could get boring in a hurry.

    • Michael is not a minor or a mature person with all of the experience of a full life. He has been over exposed for far too long. Everyone remotely related to anyone that knows him is trying to make a penny off of this guy. I do not envy him his position.

    • the only thing he regrets is the fact that he might lose a sponsorship deal or two over this. that is obvious.

that being said, I've always thought he looked like a pothead. didn't he get a DUI too?

I would love to go down to Baltimore and hit the town with Michael Phelps.

    • Seriously, he is getting bagged on for smoking weed. When are people going to back off it. It is natural, grown on earth. It's not heroin, or speed, or cocaine. C'mon. And as far as people saying it is the "gateway" drug....sorry, if you are looking for more, that's your bad. Don't blame a natural remedial blessing for the reason you make a bad choice to take drugs. And as far as Michael Phelps goes, he should be suing someone for putting out his personal business. If I posted myself smoking a bong, noone would care. It obviously didn't hurt his swimming abilites! Get over it!

I think that your comment was a little exaggerated! If you HATE Michael Phelps because he smoked pot, then you hate a whole slew of people.......there are probably more people that do smoke pot, than don't. I say, it should show people that he can smoke it and it doesn't challenge his ablities to swim......get over it!

    • Who cares if he smokes weed, it is a natural part of this world, it grows from the earth without the need of being manipulated by man made drugs. We never killed anyone, if anything it helped people and there many testimonies that patients have claimed that it is much better in all cases that the drug is much more relieving. Weed should be legal around the world, the only reason it is not is because the governments can’t control the taxes and revenues it produces. Again Weed never killed anyone, I don’t know what the big deal is Bush and his Friends Herb all the time? Unnecessary Negative Media against celebrities.

I fully agree. People need to stop calling weed a drug.....it's not. It is great. It helps millions of people around the world. I think it would be legalized if the government could figure out a way to tax it. Until then, burn down. You have never heard of anyone dying from weed. Yet alcohol is legal and people die from it every 61 seconds.......

The snake with cell phone decided to make money off of a guest at some one elses party. Athletes have an obligation as role models, whether they choose to or not. Okay so he didn't become the hero of all who choose to enjoy the bounty that mother nature offers.

Phelps is beholden to his sponsors, he's got to behave holier than thou or he will lose his sponsors and have to get a regular job after he hits 30...
Don't ask professional entertainers/athletes to fight for any important cause that goes against the establishment's views, they're already corrupted via their endorsement contracts...
