Surgeons in the United States have removed a donor's kidney through her vagina in the first operation of its kind to remove a healthy kidney.

Both the donor and recipient are doing fine after the 29th January operation at John Hopkins medical centre.

The surgery is actually less invasive than normal techniques and as a result Doctors claim that patients could have a kidney removed via their vagina in a three hour operation and be home the next day. The medics believe the prospect of having a kidney removed via the vagina could lead to an increase in donors, but they did fail to specify how many people had confirmed this would make them more likely to donate.

"Removing the kidney through a natural opening should hasten the patient's recovery and provide a better cosmetic result," said Doctor Robert Montgomery.
