Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer, which was apparently at an early stage.

Court officials said the 75-year-old Ginsburg had surgery Thursday at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, said her surgeon. Dr. Murray Brennan. This was according to a release issued by the court.

Ginsburg, a justice since 1993, had colon cancer earlier in her tenure.

The cancer was discovered during a routine, annual exam late last month at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

The court said a CAT scan revealed a tumor measuring about 1 centimeter across the center of the pancreas...

    • I just hope that if Ginsburg decides to retire, she's replaced with another woman. Lord knows we are underrepresented as it is already...

I'm amazed that she is actually 75- she does not look her age.

    • I for one am pleased that we have Preident Obama and a Democratic majority in the senate. Now is the time for all the old farts to retire so Obama can appoint some young, liberal, progressives.

    • Gee, maybe Obama will name Blago to replace her, he's looking for work... or maybe Mrs. Obama; isn't she an attorney? She's female and black, good use of minorities out of work.

She is aloud to hold her position until death or she chooses to retire because that is how the constitution is written. The idea was to limit political influence on the court's decision making process.

what does having cancer have anything to do with her ability to perform? my father was an amazing teacher and had terminal brain cancer yet continued to teach and inspire his student up until the last few months.

If you dont like her policies or views thats totally fine, but dont insult her for having cancer. Thats an insult to everyone who has either endured the disease themselves or had a loved one suffer.

Fo real, besides they are offered LIFE tenure.

That is part of the balance of power in our country.

The supreme court is designed to be the least variable entity and the slowest to change. Therefore we need to have 75 year old people running it.

She's one of the sharpest individuals to have ever been on the bench. The clerks are very fearful of her because of her work ethic and her extreme intellect (she expects the clerks to be on par w/ her).

    • I hate to be grim, but if this had to happen, I am glad it is happened while Obama is President. The Supreme Court is way too conservative as it is.
