Carbon. The actual "bricks" the plant uses to build itself.
Industrial hemp has a legendary appetite for carbon, which it harvests by taking CO2 from the environment it grows in, and in return it releases an oxygen molecule. Cleansing and purifying the atmosphere as a happy by-product of growing wide-ranging industrial hemp crops.
It conditions the soil as it grows, and the deep roving roots break up compact or clay based soils making it a terrific alternating crop. It also removes impurities from the soil with fantastic efficiency. The reason the land around Chernobyl, scene of the worst nuclear reactor leak in history, continues to this day, to grow large hemp crops.

At a time when rhetoric is flying about becoming more self-sufficient in terms of energy, why is it illegal to grow this plant in this country?

Today there is much discussion going on in America about cannabis/hemp. This is a wonderful time in America for those of us who have realized the potential of cannabis/hemp.
We must stand up to spin! The powers that be, the ones who have worked so hard to keep it illegal, will start spinning to protect their profit, or their complacency to the spin of yesterday.
Today is the day, stand up when they start spinning the distorted facts of the past. Our environment is in shambles, our economy is in shambles. No one has an answer yet as to how we will recover from our troubles. People are loosing their jobs daily, with little possibility of quickly finding a new job. We need new industry. We must find an answer, which aids the environment and industry. Cannabis/hemp is the answer!
It's often said, "When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on". Cannabis/hemp will help tie the knots we so desperately need, both environmentally and physically.
Stand up today!

Again, from wiki:
"Industrial hemp has many uses, including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, health food, and fuel. It is one of the fastest growing biomasses knownand one of the earliest domesticated plants known. It also runs parallel with the "Green Future" objectives that are becoming increasingly popular. Hemp requires little to no pesticides, no herbicides, controls erosion of the topsoil, and produces oxygen. Furthermore, hemp can be used to replace many potentially harmful products, such as tree paper (the processing of which uses bleaches and other toxic chemicals, and contributes to deforestation), cosmetics, and plastics, most of which are petroleum-based and do not decompose easily.
While the Hemp is exported to the United States more than to any other country, the United States Government does not distinguish between marijuana and non-psychoactive Cannabis used for industrial and commercial purposes."

March on Washington is right. It is way past due time to legalize Mother Nature. This fight has been going on to long and sooner or later we will win. It is time now.

The war on drugs in America is a failure because it does not address the fundamental issue that people cause harm, not the drugs. Our society is wrong, our values are wrong, the notions instilled in us on the right way to live our lives are wrong. Add drugs into the problem, and you get more wrong. It's like saying cars kill people so they're bad. It's the way people drive, the nature of the streets, the attitudes we're presented towards driving that lead to accidents. The drug war is a blame game that happens to be making the government a lot of money that we don't get to see. The truest counter-example to the drug war on Marijuana: Michael Phelps, the greatest olympic swimmer in history, wins 12 gold medals, but likes to rip bongs. Where is his failure? Smoking pot? Have you thought about the cigarettes you smoke, the alcohol you drink, or the prescription medication that you are now dependent on, something of which the Pharmaceutical industry perpetuates and encourages? If your argument lies in the disgrace of psycho-actively altering your consciousness, well then we all fail.

I have only seen/heard/felt one negative thing about marijuana, and that is that if you smoke it, it makes you want to just chill out. This is only bad because if you do it a lot, then you end up just chilling out most of the time and not getting work done. With that said, why are we not growing? It needs to be done, and hopefully the old men and woman in washington will see past there reasons for keeping in illegal and legalize it.

when i smoked cannabis i became aware of my five senses and sought to explore each of them. my thought processes remained the same; though with a newly discovered sense of self, i was able to build upon my aspirations due to the fidelity of self.
i found bicycling to be the most effective way to enjoy self... "to each is own"
--------------------------------------------
i want cannabis legalized so that the peoples of earth can heal themselves and their planet. hopefully ridding themselves of superficial persecution.

Yet another layer of the truth. Hemp is a viable source of nutrition, textiles, medicine and healthy environment.

I really don't understand why we don't grow hemp. All I see are positives and no negatives.

Cannabis really is a wonderful resource, it's a total shame if not a crime that we aren't already using it to it's potential.
