Vermont Governor Jim Douglas has allowed a bill that permits farms to plant industrial hemp

Vermont Governor Jim Douglas has allowed a bill that permits farms to plant industrial hemp to become law without his signature. Federal law prohibits cultivating hemp, but Vermont lawmakers believe that federal policy will change, so their law directs the Agriculture Agency to prepare for the change, including drafting rules for hemp cultivation so that farmers can be licensed as soon as federal law changes. North Dakota has done the same.

    • Leaglize all of Mother Nature already. This will solve many problems namely the drugs wars especially the ones in Mexico with so many people being killed over Mother Nature. Industralized Hemp is a good thing but legalizing all Hemp is what needs to be done and quick. Gee, Uncle Sam you took the numbers racket from the mob and called it the lottery, you took the booze and tax it, you legalized the mobs Casinos, you turned the protection rackets into insurance companies. Seems to me its time to take a piece of the action and legalize POT. Just think of all the money you can make and all the people you will make happy. It seems like a win win to me.

    • Wonderful news. More & more states are taking control of issues & policies that shouldn't need federal approval - especially with so many higher priority challenges our country is facing. Here in Massachusetts we haven't stopped celebrating the decriminalization of MJ! I'd like to think hemp & its abundant uses will be a viable crop here too as states feed off of each other’s successes. Way to go VT!

      Good for you?

Smoking weed and work are not mutually exclusive...

You can still fire someone for being drunk which means you could still fire someone for being high on the job.

      Weed =/= lazy or unsuccessful

      Look at:

      Michael Phelps
      Bill Maher
      Barack Obama
      George Washington
      Thomas Jefferson
      Jon Stewart
      Bill Clinton
      George Bush
      Sean Penn
      Paul McCartney
      Dave Matthews
      Etc.
      Etc.
      Etc.

If you want to make the case that drugs are bad and lead to no success, just look at all the coke head investment bankers, accountants, and business analysts. I know they don't make the greatest of examples in our current economic environment, but you get the point.

I'd prefer that you would not spin (mislead) people into thinking everyone who consumes cannabis is lazy. Granted many people are lazy, both those who consume and those who do not. Claiming people who consume cannabis are lazy is spin. It's a distraction from real facts.

Wow, it really sucks that smoking weed makes you feel lazy. You definitely shouldn't smoke it, then. And while you're at it, leave everyone else alone. Don't project your weed issues onto others.

Tobacco makes me queasy, so I don't smoke cigarettes. But other people do, and that's their prerogative. If you can't handle alcohol, its your responsibility to never drink it. But you can't tell everyone else to follow suit - they might have a better grasp on it. Same goes for pot.

And while we're at it... the fact that alcohol and tobacco are legal has not affected the effectiveness of our military. Why do you assume that pot would?

^^^ Though it is a nice point to make (very useful for convincing people to AT LEAST take the first step and begin industrializing hemp) it is a non-issue.

It should all be legal, because pot can be just as much of a cash crop as hemp.

    • Ronald Reagan started the "War on Drugs" on the national level. He didn't wait for the states. Why does President Obama need the states to end it? Everything doesn't have to go through the court of public opinion. Too many cooks in the kitchen isn't good. President Obama could change the laws governing cannabis/hemp with the stroke of a pen. Take it off the dangerous substance list and let the conversation begin!

    • The legalization/decriminalization of marijuana has to start at the state level. With enough state support the federal government will have no choice but to change their laws on marijuana as well. Contact your local senators and congressmen!

    • Kudos to Vermont Governor Jim Douglas!

Today is the day, stand up when they start spinning the “distorted" cannabis/hemp facts of the past. Our environment is in shambles, our economy is in shambles. No one has an answer yet as to how we will recover from our troubles. People are loosing their jobs daily, with little possibility of quickly finding a new job. We need new industry. We must find an answer, which aids the environment and industry. Cannabis/hemp is the answer!

It's often said, "When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on". Cannabis/hemp will help tie the knots we so desperately need, both environmentally and physically.

Today there is much discussion going on in America about cannabis/hemp. This is a wonderful time in America for those of us who have realized the potential of cannabis/hemp.

We must stand up to spin! The powers that be, the ones who have worked so hard to keep it illegal, will start spinning to protect their profit, or their complacency to the spin of yesterday.
