Iranians rally to mark revolution

Anyone who thinks that not engaging Iran in peaceful talks is insane.

Tens of thousands of Iranians chanting anti-US slogans have rallied in the capital Tehran, celebrating 30 years of the Iranian revolution.

Addressing the rally on Tuesday, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, said Iran was ready for dialogue with the US provided the talks were based on mutual respect.

As many in the crowd carried placards reading "Death to America" and set alight US flags, Ahmadinejad said: "The new US administration has announced that they want to produce change and pursue the course of dialogue.

"It is quite clear that real change must be fundamental and not tactical. It is clear the Iranian nation welcomes real changes."

"The Iranian nation is ready to hold talks but talks in a fair atmosphere with mutual respect," he said.

i leave iran alone for a good 6 months and i knew, knew without a doubt, that good ol vierotchka would comment on that. thanks for keeping up the standards around here.

Iranians say that, diode, because your country has been killing and exploiting and causing great damage to Iran for many decades. Had a country done to yours what your country has done to Iran, you'd be saying the same thing about that country.

      last reply to this.

we haven't done crap to iran. compared to other countries anyways. they can't get over our few encounters then too bad. don't sell us oil. don't buy any of our goods. keep terrorists out of your country. just keep ignoring the UN like everybody else who isn't a superpower. keep antagonizing the world. see what it gets you.

i know of op ajax, we did that in the early 50's. are you still pissed at germany for what they did in the 40's? get over it. and they took their country back

not only that but you quoted me out of context without putting in the rest of that sentence...so please, nit pick on something else

Wow, comparing a foreign-sponsored coup to near-global total war. That's just lazy analogy. And “nitpicking?” My apologies, but I had to comment on such an absolutist statement. Good to know you are aware of Operation Ajax, unfortunately it's just the beginning. Most would view encouraging ethnic tension and international sanctions (not to mention, threatening to bomb) as interference.

    • They are rallying in the street shouting death to America and burning American flags, and people think it's a good idea to talk to them. Yeah, that should work out great. They'll love us in no time. Wow some people are naive.

    • Do the tens of thousands of people chanting anti-US slogans believe what they are chanting? Or are they doing this because their boss/school etc expects them to be out there?

Sepia346 (above) says this picture is from 1978, not today and they give the reason why they know this.

I doubt, when the media shows us pictures of protests in the streets, that it's 10s of thousands. Perhaps 10s of hundreds.
Many Iranians are very dissatisfied with their government, as they have a very high unemployment rate and high inflation.

As to why they chant...probably for the reasons you stated.

    • what is there to say about an american soldier stationed in someone else's country.. itching to go to war with another separate country.. all based on the misinterpretation of a powerless figurehead..

i understand the need for empty-headed tools to fill up your barracks.. no one to question your orders regardless of how immoral or counterintuitive they may be.. but it is disturbing when pleasure is perceived at the thought of killing others.. such a mentality is a perversion.. a liability.. and a disgrace for other americans.. and humanity at large..

i want to see iran try to conquer israel

we would jump on there shit so fast they wont know what hit him. Now that would be the battle that a lot of US soldiers would love to be in.

Dont get me wrong many people would die but where i am and where i have been, almost all of the soldiers i have met want a real war.

Now thats coming from infantry guys, i doubt any pog would want another war. And i kno i sound selfish about it but it is true.

    • I hope this talk happens. I am also very optimistic about Khatami's nomination for presidency. Ahmadinejad is not the best person to talk to, but if Khatami gets elected this summer many things can change in the Middle-East.

By the way, the picture here shows a demonstration from 1978 not the today's one.

      I can tell because:
      1. The picture of Ayatollah is different from what they use today, if they use any.
      2. The picture on the background is a portrait of Ali Shariati whose anti-cleric interpretation of Islam is not in favor of the Iranian government, but back then he was very popular among the revolutionaries. Read more about him by clicking on the link.

    • peace talks are a good thing, however, not with Iran. The only thing they understand is 5.56 mm. and the US has plenty of that to give them. Kissing their ass with negotiations will only backfire and make us look silly. What in the world would make you believe Iran would welcome real change? Those people have been aiding in the death of our troops in Iraq for years now.

Wait. Stop. What "kissing ass??" The ONLY way to get anything done with two people, two countries, etc. etc. without rushing to war, is TALK. Why is this so difficult for you all's to conceive? Are you a parent? yes? ok, look at it like this: Your child is angry, because he is tired, can't poop or is hungry. He is screaming and yelling and pulling our the hair of his older sister. What will you do? If you were a good parent you would remove him from the situation calmly first, let him shake about, ignore it for a bit and then try to talk to him about his behavior and why it is wrong. You would not smack him across the face and in so doing accidentally smack your innocent daughter as well. You would keep CALM. Work with me please on your reasoning. God this is exhausting.

We cant compare Iran to a child. Their leader is insane and wants the complete destruction of Israel, not to mention the fact he dosen't believe the Holocaust happened. Yes, we do need to negotiate but we shouldnt bend over backwards to give them a warm and fuzzy feeling when they absolutely hate the United States and everything it stands for.

"Complete destruction of Israel" is a myth created by media here. He is not sane, that is true, but he never said that. "Complete destruction of Israel" is a wrong out-of-context translation of what he said.

i hope the US does end up in talks with Iran. Certainly there should be mutual respect.. considering the arrogance that was played out by US and British operatives back in the 50's you would expect them to demand open apologies so a simple request for mutual respect is very encouraging. The US would never admit to any wrong doing of course. It's just business

Yeah because Iranians aren't people, they can't possibly be capable of change. What makes Iran so special, maybe because US has tried to kill them twice, through Iraq and now through Israel.
