Joaquin Phoenix Trips on Letterman

VSiskos
David Letterman's interview with Joaquin Phoenix may have been the weirdest interview in the history of television. With Joaquin Phoenix quitting his acting career to pursue a hip hop music career, some feel this whole situation may be just one big hoax.

    • I care only enough to post here and say that I'm not interested in silly celeb antics like this. And the only reason I DO post here about that is because I really wish I didn't have to see pics and stories about them all over the place.

    • After viewing the video of Joaquin rapping, I just hope he has socked away a good deal of money from his acting, because I can't imagine anyone actually paying to hear that drivel.

    • Why do these random doofuses always want to take up rap as an alternate4 career? Why not Polka, or anything else that will guarantee a laugh?

    • I'm trying to figure out why people though/think Andy Kaufman was funny. I can't think of anyone I find less funny... maybe Rodney Dangerfield. That being said, David Letterman is a douche and I wasn't humoured at all by his question/response banter with Joaquin. If anything, it made Joaqiun look even more stoned. And who cares if he was? Who hasn't been stoned at least once in their lifetime?

Seeing the Phoenix clip reminded me instantly of Crispin Glover. Glover wins the weird award hands down. Phoenix is saying FUck Hollywood. I'm with him. I hope he stops being polite and starts outing everyone in that shithole for what they are.

    • Didn't he pull this during some other interview several years ago? I remember something about bugs crawling out of his head, or something like that.

    • He's totally messing with us. That's how the Phoenix family is. Have you seen Joaquin's other interviews, ex. "Is there a frog on my head?" Not much different.

    • Whatever it was made for good TV. I thought it may have been a bit because it was so weird. But Paul and Dave both ganged up on him all bets were off. Phoenix almost got up when he put the gum under the desk, he should have walked off at that point, that would have made it even better.

But my personal view, Phoenix dropped some Xanax, or acting has turned him mental. Rapping? C'mon. he's giving white boys a bad rap everywhere, pardon the pun.

    • i can't believe people care so much, and how could you not think this was at least partially staged. he is just fucking around, he's said he quit acting and is going to be a rapper, and then it comes out that he is making some mockumentary. i think it's pretty obvious what's going on. he is a great actor though to pull that off, i would have busted out laughing. plus they do shit like that on letterman a lot, it's just more obviously fake than this.

    • Kanye acted like an ass on Letterman while wearing sunglasses.. why didnt anyone accuse him of being on drugs?

being on any hallucinogen while on TV could probably be the most anxiety inducing situation i could think of... or the most exciting trip you'd ever have.

but he does not look like hes on anything, he just doesnt give a shit about dave's stupid questions. the way he responds, his body language and verbal. Hes straight

    • Publicity, publicity, publicity! It doesn't matter if he is for real, we're all talking about him. And if he is serious, we'll all be anxious to see if he can really sing and/or rap. Nice goin', Joachin! I could not have promoted you better; and thanks for stickin' it to Letterman, LOL!!!!

It's interviews like this that show you how skilled a guy like Letterman is. He can turn even awkward moments into something hilarious. Really bizarre.

    • It looks like bipolar type behavior to me. Maybe he felt pushed into being an actor by god knows what influences and he's finally decided to come out and try something different. Maybe he's finely just being himself, crazy as that maybe. More power to him.

    • All outward signs of coming down from getting "stoned!"

Any accolades had about this actor are in the overflowing ashtray filled with stubs of his "blunts!"

Yep it sure was a trip.

Letterman asking if he was here was great!

Phoenix was in a parallel universe...somewhere....

    • Why would we even give a rats ass about some millionaire actor or ex actor making a complete fool of himself on dave's show. At the very least Andy Kaufman was funny and worth watching, this fool looked so wasted it hurt too see someone obviously out of his mind whatever is left of it.

    • Only time will tell where this is going...in the meantime he is getting mad press by acting like he's clinically depressed or just stopped giving a f*ck. Either way, at least it is interesting to see people not get all excited about nothing.

Yes, I know I just used a double negative, tell your mom not to freak out.

    • He's losing it obviously, hollywood is a macabre place, you would'nt believe the the kinds of things celebrities do at private parties....but anyway... Hollywood is the devils playground, and if you aren't careful you can get hurt, like his brother, God bless his soul....

But I think people are misconstruing him. I think that little episode of him rapping was a spontaneous thing, and that was a joke, but him quitting his acting career probably isn't and the claim that he may be starting a music career is the joke, i think people are confused about whats going on...But then again, i don''t know LOL

Um, ok, I'm not saying that every celebrity is decadent, but, do you occasionally go to parties where they have mass drug infested orgies? have you gone to the play boy mansion and had a liscentious orgy fest? Do you get drugged up and have Gangbangs? All we get is the public image of celebrity life, not the private experience, but once again, I'm not accusing all celebrities of being liscentious, but this kind of stuff goes on, believe me......

    • I dont know...part of me thinks this is a stunt. Hes a good enough actor and its so ridiculously over the top that I think this is all for publicity. Either that or he really has lost it. I guess in time we'll see.

    • I'm really not sure which was worse - the interview...ok I was being generous - the scene where he sat there and tried to remember where he was and the host tried to figure out where he went - or the rapping.....they're both so.....disturbing.

    • He probably was, his parents were hippies that raised him and his brother on a communal camp; you don't think he hasn't done his fair share of drugs? He's wearing sunglasses, mumbling partial sentences, and is clearly somewhere else mentally... he's definitely tripping, and honestly, I doubt he really cares, lol. Tripping is a mind-opening experience, everyone should do it at least once... people have been tripping and smoking since the dawn of our existence; just stay off crack, heroin, and prescription meds and drug use is safe, fun, and exciting :-)

Having said that... Joaquin Phoenix.... the next Marky Mark?!?!

Wow...that's just...how does one put this without being hurtful......interesting - in that Chinese curse sense of the word. EEK! He's such a talented actor....one question Joaquin....why?

    • I still like and support Joaquin Phoenix. This interview was much like the "forced" interactions I commonly encounter at family parties.
I can definitely relate to his demeanor, as I never feel obligated to answer random questions. I've heard talk that he was "on something", and that's an easy judgment to make. But who are you to judge?

Let him BE. Positive thoughts go out to you, Joaquin Phoenix.

Sure we can relate to "forced" encounters. But he's out promoting himself. That would be like a car salesman telling you to "fuck off" when asking about a car.

he just doesn't seem "all there". i've never seen anyone on late night tv seem like such a space cadet.

and that last time letterman says "sorry you couldn't be here tonight", pheonix just smiles like he knows it's obvious to everyone watching that he ate a handful of peyote buttons.

You are right in saying that Joaquin has the right to say or do what he wants, but in coming on a talk show, the actor is, by his presence there, agreeing to talk about his latest film or endeavor, and Joaquin patently refused to do so, wasting Dave's and the viewers' time. If you don't want to play the game, stay off the playground.
