Really? Phelps, man up, you've done nothing wrong and nothing that would permit a (fake) apology. If he has to apologize for using marijuana, then every other athlete across the globe needs to apologize for drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

he's ultimately setting an even worse example for young people by being an insincere cowardly hypocrite.

I am so surprised that most of you just "don't get it". Being a "gold medalist" buys you a huge career. Of course he is lying and you would be too if caught. Easy for most of you to say "oh , stand up a be a man" and even name calling.
I am so sure that IF any of you had anything to lose as he does, you would be asking forgiveness (because his family and coaches want him too). Remember he is very young. How can you stand up and say "I don't apologize, because its not wrong"!
yeah, riiight. The man then comes and takes your life away piece by piece due to ignorance of weed.
As much as I wish it was LEGAL...it is NOT legal so don't act so shocked and say he is disgracing weed smokers.

Phelps is a hypocrite and a coward.
Free the weed!
Prohibition does not work; prohibition is a historical and contemporary failure.
Marijuana should be legalized, taxed and regulated for medical and recreational purposes.
Drug use and abuse should be treated as a medical problem, rather than a criminal problem.
All those incarcerated for non violent drug violations should be released immediately.
The war on drugs is a war on Americans. Let us end the assault on our friends and neighbors.

Yeah, I can see that. He is basically apologizing to save his a$$. I also believe that there are alot more people that need to be behind bars instead of people caught with drugs that are for there own personal use.

As a teenager from the 60s, I will not apologize today! The thing that kills me...parents sit around the house with their beer/alcohol killing their livers and brains, and they tell little Johnny and Susie that MJ is a horrible addictive drug while they are USING the most dangerous , socially accepted drug of all! The kids go, ok, alcohol is fine, weed bad. I guess thats why we have year after year of DUI deaths...the kids wanted to stay off the 'hard stuff" and stick with their booze. What a travesty and waste of time. Don't feel bad Micheal. They already snatched your picture off the Wheaties box but no one eats that shit anymore, lol!

I smoked pot back in the day and did other things. But it's pot!!! And I am one of those parents that drinks and tell my kids dont do drugs. I think I can be closed minded. But one think if my kids drink or do drugs I would want them to be open about it. I have awhile they are only 11 & 7. I do agree with you though alcohol vs pot....yeah pot is nothing. I've never heard of someone killing someone while high on pot. Oh, I don't eat wheaties....

Well, we never had alcohol around. We had 3 sons. My husband is a tee totaler but I have always drank wine.
First of all, all my sons turned out great in careers, families, etc.
Bad news: teen years were a roller coaster. No matter what we do, the peers rule in the teens. They want to fit in and they are all so uptight, most will try something. I would meet them at the door for a kiss goodnight at curfew (I was really smelling their breath). Later in life they told stories of things they did to fool me and their father. I was not amused.

Yeah, although I completely agree with the fact that there isn't a thing wrong with what he did, I highly doubt he would come out as a proponent of weed. First of all, who knows if he even feels that way, that is to say, does he even regularly smoke. Probably not...with training for the Olympics, they probably tested him every hour on the hour and made all his friends take a polygraph as to his drug history.
Point is, as nice as it would be for him to publicly endorse weed in an articulate way, it won't happen. Micheal Phelps is lookin' out for Micheal Phelps. He's got sponsors who try to maintain some sort of unrealistic 'wholesome' image. He was at a party, took a bong rip, and someone did him dirty by taking the picture and releasing it.
Funny thing is though, there would be no problem is he was caught doing a keg-stand. The guy won a goddamned gold medal...who cares what he does on his own UNRELATED time.

If I was rolling in the dough of fame and fortune like he was I would apologize my ASS off.
I don't think he did anything wrong, and I totally think this is bullshit. But seriously, with the amount of money he is making, I would be more surprised if he DIDN'T apologize.
What sucks is that when he was under 21 he got a DUI and no one said shit, which is so much worse than smoking pot. Seriously?

If anything, weed should be legalized and alcohol illegal. Put 100 drunk people in a room and put 100 high people in another. I'm almost certain there will be more 'trouble' with the drunks.

Santonio Holmes of the Steelers apologized after he got caught with weed... He said he let his team and the fans down by his carelessness.... This was before he was the MVP of the Superbowl... I thought it was a first class thing to do... There was no judgement or excuses as to the validity of the illegality of weed... Just a plain first class act... And I appluad him for it...
Maybe Phelps should go live in China where drug convictions are a possible death sentence... - 3 years ago

Lame!! Phelps shouldnt have to do this crap. Umm... he didnt say the N word, didnt offend anyone, didnt harass, or attack or put others in danger. he just smoked a plant, less harmfull than cigarettes or alcohol.
That being said... he should bounce back in a couple of months, and this will just be a small side note in Phelp's amazing career.

MIKE! Stop listening to whoever is telling you to do this bullshit! Your fans are of a generation that believes being HONEST and keeping it real mean a whole hell of a lot more than some manufactured squeaky clean athelete image more suited to the 50's ... By apologising for (essentially) being caught you are legitimizing so many untruths - that we have to feel GUILTY smoking, that if anyone "finds out" they somehow have the right to denigrate you and make assumptions about your character. You should be telling China how much money it could make if it became the world's #1 exporter of hemp products in all it's wonderous categoris - medicine, industrial, fuel, food, coxmetics, textiles ... how they could take over the world's economies by eliminating the petrol-fuel needs of a BAZILLION chinese AND having the monopoly on hemp products ... Think about it, Mike, use your own judgement, 'cause the advice of whoever's been giving it to you sucks ass. You come across looking embarassed, insincere & beaten.
Don't you know how much stress it takes to lie? Takes more muscles, effort, makes you look tired ... when you believe what you say and tell the truth about it you smile and relax ...Do the right thing, you have a lot of people that would be behind you for reasons that have nothing to do with smoking. Your character, passion & perseverance are traits that we saw during the Olympics and came to admire you for, don't let the desires of others make you forget who you are.

he has to do this to save his career, as he's already lost one contract. i would do whatever i have to do (within reason) to save my bread and butter. you pick and choose your battles sometimes.
i'd love for him to be the spokesman for responsible pot use; however, i don't think he would or could be the 'pot martyr' for america. one person will make a difference, but one person will not change the laws himself -- at least not american pot laws.
