More than one-third of bathers who swam at an Atlantic Ocean beach in South Florida in a medical study were exposed to dangerous staph bacteria, and 1 percent came in contact with an even more-dangerous, antibiotic-resistant form of the bacteria called MRSA, according to a University of Miami paper presented in Chicago on Friday.
But because of the narrow scope of the pilot study, researchers can't say whether the bathers brought the bacteria with them or were infected by the water or sand, so they can't say if the problem might extend to other beaches. None of the swimmers reported any ill effects.
